pondering after 18 yrs

Post by achesley43@ymail.com » Thu Aug 17, 2017 10:10 am

Was looking at my old KLR while setting up stuff for the batch of Watermellon Wine fixing to happen. Been with me for 18 years now as I bought it in Dec '99 to finished the TAT from Central Arkansas to Oregon with.  Broke it in running 3500 to 4000 going to Ozark, Ar to continue where I had left off due to rain and mud on my 97 DR 350 SE and a 475 mile trip in the rain to get home. Not fun on a DR350 for sure.  I had a BMW R11RA at the time ( my second BMW ) as my main travel bike and ended up with 3 bikes for awhile after buying the KLR.  Then the BMW R11RA was traded in on an '02 R1150GS. Then the DR was sold. Then in about 04 picked up a DR400SE and figured it would replace the KLR. So , put both on a trailer and went to Big Bend. Had done a trip to Arkansas with the 400 before this Big Bend trip. After riding both down the same roads over the course of a week, came home and sold the DR400SE.  Just love the steady torque of the KLR more than the aggressive 400. Maybe if I was 20 r so years younger, might of been different.  Next in line was a DR650SE I picked up. Liked it and it had way better suspension than the KLR. But, not the same torque curve. So, after a year are so with the DR650 it went and the KLR just smiled and said " NEXT".  That came in 07 when I wanted a new highway steed but was dizzy on how much an R1200 GS was gonna be to get ready for travel. Nothing except my old tank bag would cross over as had my last 3 BMW's.  So, instead of shelling out near 18 thousand dollars,  shelled out 7400 dollars for a new DL1000 up in Ohio when I was up there in my truck visiting the AMA Museum. After a year trying to get it comfortable for LD travel and didn't like a few things about the engine power delivery, it went for an 07 Bandit 1250S left over in mid 08.    And, the KLR just sat there, being called to duty every once in awhile.  Things done to it were Corbin flat top seat,  bar backs,  larger windshield, valve adj changing 2 shim at about 10K miles. Spring on Balance assem tensioner was broke so change it and the arm out.  Advance the ex cam on tooth,  KLX needle and jeting change, Valves again at 40K miles, changed all 4 shims. New carb and jetted it. Race Tech front emulator and Progressive rear shock followed. Lots of tire and tube and oil and filter changes along with changing out all bearings at 40K miles.  And summing it all up, just don't think that KLR going to leave this home while I'm still alive with just 49,300 miles on it yesterday. And , Suzy the Bandit with 90 plus K miles is still hang also. The longest I've ever kept 2 bikes. Still love both of them.

Great write up on the KLR.  I bought my '99 in 2002.  I have it set up how I want it and almost sold it earlier this year but backed out at the last minute.  I see prices on used ones look like they have gone up but still what I can get out of it, I am afraid I would be buying another one and spending time and money getting it set back up how I want it.  I found an '87 first year KLR650 this year for sale in fantastic condition.  My 25 year old son bought it for $1500 (best deal I've seen in a long time).  Had to rebuild the carb but for $1500 he got a great bike without spending a lot of money that will never go down in value, is simple to work on, cheap to license and insure, and is 5 years older than him
