Chris, Your DR uses a screw valve adjuster and no shims are required. The adjustment interval after the first break-in adjustment is at 7500 miles. So since you don t know the history of this bike, I d say it is time to have them checked. http://dr650.zenseeker.net/ValveAdjustment.htm
