filter dust, what oil to use.

Dinking around looking for some 'parts' and pieces, I found this discussion on a BMW site of all things, =air filters.Taken at face value, inside a forum's FAQ, it made me scratch my head. snip http://faq.f650.com/FAQs/PerformanceModificationsFAQ.htm Driving without air filter. There is not much to worry about running w/o filter long enough to troubleshoot jetting. Like Richard said they used to run motorcycles for years with nothing more than gravel strainers on the intakes. There is only one size of particle that does any damage when it gets sucked in and blown out of a 4 cycle engine (two strokes are a whole different story!). I don't know if you have a paper element or not but if you do you should consider a change right away if you do. Paper is not a good filter medium for many reasons, one of which is it swells up when wet with water or oil fumes and doesn't pass any air. It's like riding with choke on. I recommend K&Ns but I don't want to start that debate here again. F650McGyver unsnip May I suggest, 'for entertainment purposes only' Why would you troubleshoot jetting without a filter, then install a filter...like it does not effect airflow and thus, air/fuel mixture (or am I missing something?.)cough.

The phrase a penny wise and a pound foolish comes to mind. Chainsaw bar oil on the air filter of your $200 B&S engine is probably ok but I wouldn t risk a $5k motorcycle. While I no longer have a foam motorcycle air filter, I use the PJ1 cleaning and oiling sprays leftover from my last one to service my dinky Briggs & Stratton push mower engine. So far, so clean. =) What's your thoughts on using chainsaw bar oil as a foam filter oil? It's tacky and designed to "cling" to fast moving parts. Boring it to death by soaking it into a foam filter medium might give it a new hobby: trapping dirt. -eddie --- New Outlook Express and Windows Live Mail replacement - get it here: http://www.oeclassic.com/ (snip) The type of oil you use in a filter is also important. Motor oil will work in an emergency but will also not work as well or as long as oil designed for filtering. Gauze type and foam type filters use different oils since their needs are slightly different. Fred http://www. arrowheadmotorsports.com
