So far, so clean. =) What's your thoughts on using chainsaw bar oil as a foam filter oil? It's tacky and designed to "cling" to fast moving parts. IRT compression releases, perhaps there is some x-pollination of memories. yikes. Perhaps you are remembering the compression release on the Yamaha XS2My 1972 XS 650 had a compression release which was built into the start system; you pulled the compression release to FULL and it engaged the starter, at least that is what I remember..... I never pulled the compression release to help start the bike while using the leg-kicker, not that it was that difficult to start. I did pull it in slightly once when the bike was running and you could feel the valve beating against the compression release. I never heard of anyone using the compression release as an engine brake, but I 'guess' that is possible as well. but that is a guess at best. Looking at Google images, I don't see a compression release on the 70 or 71 XS1, as I remember, those were kick start only (seems it would have benefited from a compression release.)I think later XS models (1975?) eliminated the compression release completely. maaatin.
