Does anyone have experience with the Garmin Montana series?  Looking at the 610 to replace a 60CSx that performed great for a long time.  Supposedly gloves work with the touch screen.  My use is mostly off road dual sport with the KLR and a GSA and some bicycling.  Bigger screen is nice due to aging eyes.  Any feedback is appreciated.

Monty,I don't have any experience with the Montana, other than it seems to be the choice of world-class adventure riders.I thought about it till I saw the price, and it made me take better care of my 76CSX.m1. a satisfied 76CSX user (but you have to understand its limitations. cough.)

Thanks Earl!  Agree with the cost factor on these toys.  GPS can spoil you.  Tech has really changed the way even us low tech KLR folks travel.  The button on back of my 60CSx snapped off.  Had to use Velcro and zip ties to keep it secure in the Ram mount.  Thing still performs flawlessly.  Those Ram mounts are also pretty large. Especially on a crowed moto handlebar or bicycle.  That Montana mount looks really simple.  One thing that concerns me is using a touch screen on a device which will be used in the dirt?

I have a Garmin Montana 650T with a ram/amps mount ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/ product/B0055BJBMC). Yes, touch screen works with gloves just fine but, depending on your hand size, I'd consider gluing a "bump" (about the size of a pencil eraser) on your index finger otherwise it's pretty easy to "fat finger" yourself into frustration while riding. The "T" version comes with Topo map but that seems to be less useful that the US road navigation maps as they are routable and get you what you need about 95% time (only had a couple of instances where they weren't on point). The screen size is good but I've found that upping the scale to like 500 ft, makes it very doable. The mount above has an audio out, which I've run through a Sena 10c - so, whalla, turn warnings (which let me spend a bit more time on scenery). I also ran the whole shebang off a fused, three-port, relay. Gotten plenty wet/muddy and no issue so far. Dale

What I would suggest if you are using a touch screen is to go to one of the OFFICE supply houses and get the screen protector and put that on the screen. We did that for the 76CSX and the screen below is still pristine. cough. other than the 'dog-turd' void where the pixel's have failed. Fortunately, the dog-turd is in the middle of the screen. (Fortunately, NOT). Let us know if you buy and give a short update/product review.Never read anywhere anyone regretted using it.Over on ADV, there are some (English, Russian, N. Asia) riders ie Sibrinski, that use this system and are very pleased with it.m1.

FWIW.  Just lost my Garmin etrex while hunting.  Major use was tracking distance hiked and waypointing the truck.  Looked at the price of new and realized for the no cost, I could download an app to my phone.  Trying it out before I decide on the $10 upgrade that allows you to download USPS topos to your sd card. Price is right and multiple map choices available.  I selected the Polaris Navigator app which options up to the Waypoint app if you want the perks. On 8/27/2016 8:09 PM, Monty cycletip@... The Montana will be my next GPS.  I have played with the phone (android and iPhone).  Rever is a good app to download.  You can( for a fee) use all of the Butler maps (it is their app).  Here are the problems I have with the phone.  You have to leave it plugged in (if not it only lasts about 2 to 3 hours).  It is not water proof or shock proof (I know there are some that claim to be).  They cost about 6 to 7 hundred dollars.  I have heard numerous stories of the mounts failing on them.  I have had My garmin 76cxs on my bike now for over 8 years and had 1 crash and 2 get offs and numerous rides in the rain.  No issues. nklr time for new gps

Post by cycletip » Tue Aug 30, 2016 10:52 am

While phones are amazing they're just not practical for the application.  Also, price to use a phone out of the country is prohibitive.  The number of choices and applications Garmin offers is amazing.  Many times I'll just download someone's tracks and use that as my only guide without map software.    Yes Rev, that screen protector is a great idea.  Have one on a phone and surprised it works good as it does so will do the same with this.  Also looked over ADV and even the guy who goes by the name Countdown recommended the Montana or one of the Marine 78 models.  Can't get past the reversed buttons on top vs the bottom and the screen size is same as the 60.  He's a mapping guru so suppose it's a good option if ya want buttons and smaller screen. Thanks everyone, Monty

Monty,I earlier referred to an ADV rider that went to the Garmin Montana; his correct screen name is Colebatch. Use Google Fu for more info. Here is one of his epic rides; there are more than enough to keep you busy for hours if you are so inclined. http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/sibirsky-extreme-2012-the-toughest-ride-of-them-all.834987/ I think I have read every thread he has posted. He has gone some amazing places.m.

nklr time for new gps

I went to the Montana 600 several years back due to the 276C out of production plus can't even get it fixed anymore. The touch screen while moving drove me crazy when wanting to increase screen size. But, got used to it and used it for a few of my last cross country trips. Now that the LD trip days are over, I still use it on my Bandit 1250S and in the truck at times. Still have my old 276C on the KLR.
A word of caution on the screen protectors and direct sunlight. My 600 started going crazy one time with the screen switching all over the place, Was advised to pull off the protective film as it was contracting and expanding and causing changes just as you were touching the screen. I pulled it several years ago and  never a problem since.
