saving an old agm battery

Post by nakedwaterskier » Mon Feb 01, 2016 10:44 pm

I bought the Deka AGM battery yrs ago and it would no longer start the bike. Winter and lack of riding didn't help it. I would start it up once in awhile and/or charge it for awhile in the off season.  But, it was definitely old and seemingly dead. I tried charging it with a 4 amp car charger for an hour and that did very little. My roomie/tenant works with nimh Prius/Toyota/Lexus and Honda/Acura battery packs for his profession. He uses several Radio Control Model Car/Airplane battery chargers to recondition the car battery pack cells. From doing some reading I discovered AGM batteries are basically lead acid batteries but aren't wet like normal ones. I also read that desulfators basically discharge (but not too much) and recharge but when they recharge they overcharge a little. So, I charged it a second hour on the 4 amp car charger then put it on on of his RC battery device on nimh setting and let it discharge it 25%. Then I put it back on the car charger for another hour and made sure it didn't get hot. Then I let it sit overnight and charged it 45 mins on the 4 amp car charger the next morning. Then a few hours later a half hr, then a few hours later 15 mins. Now the battery holds at about 12.4 volts. I will update in a couple of weeks to let you know how reliable/how well I did. But, for now it is working great! 1)Don't let the battery get hot. 2)Have a volt/ohm meter on hand so you can tell what is going on. 3)Wear gloves and safety glasses and long sleeves to be safe. 4)Take the battery out of the bike when you do this. Note the 4 amp car battery charger has a gauge and when I started the process it would zoom up to 7 amps...It seemed done when it fell to around 2.7 amps. His RC battery maintainer has settings for several types of batteries but it didn't have an automatic program for lead acid or agm.

saving an old agm battery

Post by Mark » Tue Feb 02, 2016 1:50 pm

I have 7 different charges, (3 are charge & Auto Maintain)  The one have have used the most in the last few yrs, is the Automatic Digital unit. The Problem I found with the Fancy dancy Digital unit is, when a Battery is almost dead after sitting all winter, it would only charge to about 70-80 percent and Shut off saying 100% & only 10v to 11v "Done". (Done to the Unit is, 100% of what it senses  that battery will do. Knowing it was not even a yr old, I decided to experiment and  grabbed out one of the Older units, that keep charging full 10 amp. rate, (rate I set at 2amp. 10a amp or 250 amp.) until, you shut it off. (Shut if off Old School = UNPLUG IT. LOL) A few hours later I Retested with My Multimeter, HMMM better, a few hours later 13.5v On Monday, February 1, 2016 11:44 PM, "nakedwaterskier@... saving an old agm battery

Post by achesley43@ymail.com » Tue Feb 02, 2016 4:16 pm

Been using Battery Tender plus units for quite a few years with no problems. Even on dead batts, just takes longer for them to get to 12+ volts. AGM, Deepcycle Marine, Truck, doesn't seem to make a difference to them. So far that is. ;-)

Attention to the battery is a must in order to make them last.  With a little attention you can get many years out of them.  Once they start going south though it becomes pretty evident.  Push starting a KLR isn't something that sounds like much fun.  Still wish they had a kicker!

From what I gather, with a dead battery, you can not even push start a Gen 2. Push starting a Gen 1 is not a problem with the right technique. ;-) Been there and done it a few times.

Gen2 needs to be turning faster for alternator to make enough power and to trigger ignition module. Helps to pull head light fuse or plug. Really needs a down hill roll.

saving an old agm battery

Post by GMac » Thu Feb 04, 2016 10:40 am

I ve push started mine, but 2nd and sometimes 3rd gear are needed. If in 1st or 2nd on a slippery surface, the tire will just slide.

Tried to jump start a Tengai a few years back to no avail. No matter what gear it was in there was too much compression and rear tire would just skid. Was later told that one needs to simultaneously push the starter button for compression release. I have since not been in a position to try it. Is that the trick?

Gen2 needs to be turning faster for alternator to make enough power and to trigger ignition module. Helps to pull head light fuse or plug. Really needs a down hill roll.

saving an old agm battery

The decompression system on your KLR is operated by engine speed and not your starter.  There are counter weights attached to your exhaust cam that operate the decompression system.  Once your engine tries to start the centrifugal force throws out these weights and this kicks off your decompression system.  There is a small return spring that pulls back the weights.  This spring has been known to break.  If this spring is broken your decompression system would be disabled at all speeds.  This would make it difficult to turn over your engine to bump start. didn't check the wiring diagram because that doesn't seem important. So far as recall, the Tengai is similar to the Gen1 KLR in that there is no electrically operated decompression function. The 1990 & later Gen1 KLR have a Yellow/Black wire from the Starter Circuit Relay to Starter Relay (Black) wire. This wire applies "12 volts" to the CDI unit to force the CDI to retard the ignition timing by several degrees in order to reduce the chance of kick-back while the starter is cranking. This may assist in bump starting, and conclude that it should. I have not been able to notice a difference in the effect but that may be covered by my huffing and puffing. :-)     ------ Original Message ------ From: "John Theilgard" To: "DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com>; "Norm Keller" Sent: 2016-02-04 8:27:21 AM Subject: Re: [DSN_KLR650] Re: Saving an old AGM battery
