I don't want to embarrass, irritate, or aggravate anyone. Yet, with three doohickey's now on the market, which one is the best? By the best, I mean the best engineered, tooled, supported, and fitting. As far as I know, I've had no doohickey problems. Yet, if this list is accurate, I could be playing Russian Roulette with my motor. Responders are welcome to e-mail me directly if they do not wish to offend anyone. Thank you & Happy Holiday's.

Hmm... Who else is making one besides Jake (the original doohickey) and
Eagle Machine (aka Zen lever, also sold through Fayette Motorcycles,
Fred, and Happy Trails)?
Only because it's the lever I am familiar with, Jake's is a nice hunk of
4130 steel that's been heat treated to MIL-H-6875 spec (which includes
tempering of the steel). I have a copy of the certification sitting on
my desk if you're interested in it.
If you're looking for the very best fit, order an undersize DH from
Jake, this'll allow you to hand file it for a tight fit. There appear to
be rather large tolerances in the balancer shaft dimensions so hand
fitting your DH is the *only* way to get a perfect fit.
Place your order now, AFAIK both Jake and Eagle don't have any in stock
and are preparing new batches of levers.

I don't want to stir anything up either, but here's my opinion. Jake and
Devon busted their butts to develop, and then produce a replacment for the
stock lever. It's been through a couple revisions, and is now more than
ready for prime time. Jake has my full confidence in his ability to make the
part that is needed, and to make it in exactly the correct way.
It seems to me that any and all newcomers are taking advantage of all the
brainstorming and sweat, and simply riding the coattails of the machinist
who's been working on this from the time the problem was identified.

To set the record straight - NO ONE is riding on anyone's coat tails!
I've been making parts for ELDEN for about 12 years now - not all
KLR - but most. The second job I ran on my mill was for him in 1990.
(I also make proprietary parts for other sellers of KLR parts. They
own the design, and may have someone else make them in the future.)
He came to me and asked me to make the "doohickey" when he was not
satisfied with what was available. There is enough work in the design
and programming that whem a couple of people wanted me to make them
in quantity, I said fine. At the time, I had not heard of Devon, or
his web page. My thanks to him for doing such a wonderful job for no
money.

I don't know about what you said Mark St. Hilaire, Sr, that sounds like sour
grapes to me. This list is really getting cut throat IMO. You assume that
newcomers are not good? Well you were a newcomer too at one point. Besides
the person who was mainly responsible for the Eagle part has been working
around KLRs longer than any of us.

The various doohickeys look similar because they perform identical
tasks. It's simply a case of parallel development.
It's a free country. I'm sure Elden and Mike put in just about the same
amount of work as Jake and I (and all the other folks on the list who
supplied parts and advice). They developed and produced a part, they
have every right to sell it, at whatever price they choose.

Could you clarify that a little? Are us newbies supposed to go
hammer out our own freakin' doohickey if we're a real man, or what?

I think we should just "open source" the doohickey design. It's not like
anyone is going to come up with a significantly different design than
both Jake and Mike came up with, and with Jake eventually retiring, it'd
be a good way to make sure all the work that's gone into the DH design
is availible to everyone in the future.
Once I get my new computer set up, I plan on getting all the front end
stuff into AutoCAD and I'll do the doohickey as well.

Jake is a great guy, so is Fred. So whoever you buy your doohickey from is
ok, as long as its one of those two.
