Admittedly, I am not an expert on 2008 oil burning problems, nor do I have an extensive data base/experience to call upon.What I do have is 'list' observation =following 3 or 4 different KLR650 list/forums, and can conclude with a great deal of certainty, that those with a 2008 are very likely to have faulty rings; therefore, buyer beware.If I were buying a 2008--I certainly would look at a 2008 with the jaundiced eye of a one-eyed peacock inspecting a june-bug for breakfast. Having said that, if your bike does not burn oil, celebrate that and give thanks. and the KLR choir can now sing: amen.
In the dark abyss of my memory, I seem to recall that Bill Watson, aka Wattman and the inventor of the thermobob, attempted, or 'did' establish a vin number, point-in-time, that indicated that KHI had installed improved piston rings. Someone correct me if I don't have that right, or it is in a different data base/source. Perhaps correspondence with him can suggest some information you are looking for.

As for now, ride your bike and [b]keep an eye on the oil at every fuel stop.[/b]I can speak from experience, that when the rings start to fail, (as my 98 did at ~55K miles) it moved oil level in the sight glass level every from top to bottom every other gas tank = ~400 miles. Then from 56 to 57K, it was ~10oz of oil added every gas tank, which was cured with EagleMike's cylinder exchange and 685 piston replacement.

Patrick Z suggest that riding the bike above 80mph causes oil consumption.I would fine tune that suggestion that nearly every KLR I have had experience and observed, uses oil if the RPM's are held above 5,500rpm's for extended periods of time. Why. shrug. It just does. Perhaps Norm or other sage flavored guru knows. grin.
If you flog the bike = extended periods above 5.5Krpm, keep a very, very close eye on the oil.Forgive me if you already know this; but observe oil levels after sufficient time for the oil to drain down into the crankcase AND makes sure the bike is vertical/level when you check the oil in the sight glass.

I have read anything from as soon as it leaves the show room to oh my gosh you don't have a dohickey at 8k the motor will seize at any moment.
I think I going to keep up the oil changes and check the spark bolt Once a year and see how long I can ride my green pig.

Try to never pay more than NADA values Remember, if you have to sell the bike to an insurance company, they will only allow NADA value and 1/2 value for the farkles...if you are lucky.IMO: NADA/INSURANCE/Legislation are in co-hoots, and the most you will get for an insurance claim is average, NADA values; because the law says that is all that is required (yes Virginia, that is a simplified explanation of the insurance payoff).

ps: the industry is aware that the 2008 KLR has been a disastrous oil burner and the values are very suppressed.An Eagle Mike upgrade kit is ~$600 if you do it yourself...figure that into the price; I know I would.
