Wow, that takes me back. My first post was in Sept., 1998, but I may have been a lurker before that. I wonder how many old-timers are still here? I know Bogdan still surfaces every-so-often. The group certainly isn't as active as it once was in terms of post counts. I guess that's because of all the other KLR sites that sprung up since then.

Funny is I belong to 3 or 4 other KLR forums and the questions the new guys are asking were the same ones we were asking back then and even before when Kurt and Fred were keeping this site happening. And the old names from back in the day. The rememberance of stopping by and meeting Fred in '04 , I think, Also at a remote station getting gas and running into two KLR riders headed for Moab for the annual get to gether. Which I never did get to do. At that time I was returning to Louisiana from a trip to Washington and just roaming the roads more are less on my '02 BMW R1150GS. Been a heck of a ride

Nor sure what constitutes an "old timer" but I've been on the site since shortly before I bought my 1st KLR in April 2003.  It was lurking here that convinced me to chose the KLR over other dualsport contenders. I'm on my 3rd KLR now and even with a garage full of bikes it was the humble KLR that was chosen for my current trip, a meandering tour of the country that so far has taken me 8,400 miles through 21 states. I've met a lots of fellow motorcyclists on the trip that expressed surprise that "a knobby-tired dirt bike" was my chosen mount for such a trip but also met an equal number of motorcyclists on the trip who have praised the KLR for its long range, its load carrying ability and its all-day comfort. But some of the most amazing folks I've met have been fellow KLRistas. I was was re-seating the plug cap into the plug wire somewhere in the Mississippi delta, laboring in 100 degree heat in the shade beside an auto parts store.  One ole boy asked me what I was doing. I began explaining that this was a single-cylinder bike and I was fixing an intermittent high speed ignition miss when he interrupted with "that's a KLR, they are LEGENDARY!". He apologized profusely for not having the time to help me (he had a lunch date in minutes) but went inside the store and told them that I was traveling from Seattle and should be shown appropriate Southern Hospitality and that he has known  me for years from  a motorcycle web site! A minute later the owner of the store came out and shook my (greasy) hand and said "any friend of Clark's is a friend of mine" and offered to loan me any tools that I might need. I have a lot of special memories of this trip: unwittingly passing within 2 feet of a ten-foot Diamondback Rattlesnake along the Rio Grande in Texas, passing a dinner-plate sized turtle along the Mississippi River in Mississippi etc but the best memories  have been the amazing people I've met. The KLR might not be a "chick magnet" but you certainly meet some fine folks when you are riding a KLR. Makes me feel older too will hit 66 in Jan still putting around on my only KLR at the time I could not find on in Alabama called around and found a new one just inside Georgia line had me some cash so I got in my truck and took off came home with a new 2002 650 close to 14,000 miles and valve adjustment and doohickey several sets of brake shoes and fresh oil every 1,000 miles or so she's running like new.  Sent from Eddie's iPhone
