bad speedo

New speedo cable a few times. Next was the speedo hub on the front wheel failing so I replaced that. Then the front wheel failed so now I have a new wheel, hub and another new cable. 20 miles in the speedo stopped working again. All that is left is the speedo causing the cables to break 
My question is that if I buy a replacement from someone who hasnt had there bike in mud and water before can I set the miles on the ODO to match bthe bike? Should I stop waisting my time and just go buy a rally computer? I am getting to the point where a new KTM690 is sounding worth the money

I have *carefully* manipulated the wheels and dialed in a specific mileage on a KLR speedo once. This was to monitor the miles on an engine swap I did on my expedition bike. BTW, I have a good speedo available if you need one. Mark

IMO, it's best to record the mileage from the old speedo and the new on some document, such as the invoice from the replacement, then present that to the new owner if selling in future. You may wish to check with your DMV to see what they advise. If simply for your own interest, it obviously depends on what feels best to you. I'm retired so have lots of time and have done quite a bit of this work so am often motivated to do silly amounts of work for little benefit. :-)   Regarding your failed speedo drive and front wheel: I am seeing more of this due to the aging of the bikes so am actively trying to get the word out. The common problem is lack of appropriate lubrication between the speedo drive gear (the bigger of the two gears in the hub) and the hub spool (the tube on which the gear runs). Both are hard steel and prone to rusting so lack of lubrication + water = disaster. The seal can be pried out without damage, the large gear will pull out although many times it requires quite a lot of force because seizure is pending. Once the hub is stripped to this point, with driven gear/pinion or smaller gear still in place, the drive gear and spool can be cleaned and polished as required. I use a good waterproof extreme pressure chassis grease for the purpose. I often see these which have been lubed but the groove still solid with dirt. IMO, we all have to be more attentive to speedo hub service, particularly in older bikes.
