valve clearances

Got her done. Initial Measurements I believe we're spot on. Right intake came in way tight with practically no clearance. I tried again and it was then too loose. I Determined the first shim hadn't seated well in the bucket grr. Third time was a charm but next time I will shoot for one notch below the largest recommended clearance. That way if I'm off a bit I am still within specs.
Also put in the NGK plug Jeff recommended but had to buy an 18mm socket..
Thanks for the advice also Mark ?'s online directions were perfect for a newbie.

I got the 16 shim get from Fred at Arrowhead Motorsports..... I'm hoping that those shims plus the four I remove will suffice.

Valve shim size increments are 0.002" so you can only get to 0.009" or 0.010" for an exhaust valve without going too large. For the intake valves you can only get to 0.007" or 0.008" without going too large. The shims are marked in sizes like 270, 265, 260, 255, 250, 245 etc. That is the metric thickness of the shim. A 270 is 2.70mm thick. 265 is 2.65mm thick etc. Best,

Can one of you smart guys come up with a design file I can send to
http://www.shapeways.com/create http://www.sculpteo.com/en/ http://www.makexyz.com/quick-design http://www.theupsstore.com/small-business-solutions/Pages/3D-printing.aspx , or some similar place, to 3D print one of those little plastic side grills on the pre 08 KLR s ?? It s the only part i ve found that you can t get a cheap replacement for on ebay. You can get the whole shroud for USD$100 each side, but you probably want both so the color matches. A 3d printed version has got to be cheaper than that. I poked mine out with my thumb messing around near the fan and thought I had it popped back in, but 42 miles later i noticed it was gone

Can't help you with the shape file but when you get a replacement part a single zip tie at the bottom of the grill will keep it in place.
Before you spend big money on a replacement grill or shroud & grill you might want to price out an aftermarket tank that has shrouds molded with the tank. Then you can sell your remaining shroud and steel tank on eBay recovering a substantial portion of the new tanks cost.From:

3-D printing is so overrated... It seems like that's the only thing anyone talks about these days. 3-D printing is really only good for one thing: prototyping. Other manufacturing methods are far more efficient and cost effective, and it's gonna remain that way for a very long time.

Not so, not by a long shot. For example, in the radio control world, especially the vintage cars, people are printing off usable parts all the time. Some are stock parts that haven't been available for years (or decades), and others are printing of altered parts, like suspension arms of a specific length that were never available by traditional suppliers. They then go and use the parts while driving their cars. They don't use them as a prototype, to then make a mold, and recast with another material.

My use of "prototyping" also includes "one-offs". It's great for that purpose, but when I see articles about "The world's first 3D-printed car," I just roll my eyes.
Back to the side grills on a KLR: I'd just buy some expanded metal and fabricate one.
