Anybody got any idea what wieght front fork oil the KLR-650 uses.And
if I change it out to something a little heavier will that help the
front end any?

Hi,
Correct fork oil is 10 w and the level is 190mm +/- 2mm forks compressed.
Increasing the viscosity will increase rebound damping, you could go as high
as 30w but I would try 5 increments, starting with 15w. increasing the oil
level will increase the compresion ratio of the fork (stiffer) and also
increase bottoming resistance from 1/2 to full stroke. Use 6mm increments.
Increasing spring preload will also make the fork stiffer.
All these things are inter related.
It will help the front end to tune it.
I accept no resposability for my suggestions if proceeding outside factory
recomendations.

What kind of effect would increased preload and/or heavier fork oil have on pavement ride quality? Not talking about handling, just how smooth the bike is on rough pavement and freeway slab joints. What about the rear setup? Is it possible that cranking the UP the preload and/or the damping would help the bike glide over bumps more smoothly? Hi,
It would feel "harder." Less "bouncy." Less fork dive under braking. Less
vague.
You will "feel" the bumps more as the forks/shock are "harder" to move.
Going from 1>5 on the shock and increasing damping will have similar effect.
Perhaps best explained as going from a "plush" ride to a "sporty" ride.

cc, not mm, not centigrade, just plain old ounces.?

t's by no means "official", but if you dumped a little less than half
a quart into each leg, you'd be fine. you should try to squirt all of
the old oil out on your legs with the drain holes ay the bottom first
though if your not going to take them a part to measure from the top.

Hi,
Well this one is straight from the Kawasaki Service Manual.
mL x 0.03381 = oz (US)
mL x 0.02816 = oz (imp)
Why not just pour oil in until it measures:-
190 mm
7.48 ins (anyone's inches)
or use
25.63 cu ins
or get the oil density and weigh it.
using oil height does away with how much oil was left after draining, pumping
out, etc
and as Kawasaki ask you to be +or- 2mm or 0.080 in. MM's are easier to read
on a rule or measure on a fancy oil height guage.
Wonder if this is anothe oil thing!!!!!!!!!!!

How does 15W fork oil compare to Mobil 1 ATF? Which is "thicker?"
What other advantages does the ATF have?
