Hello everyone,
While riding my headlights went out, low & high. Tail and brake lights still function. No unusual events before blackout.
I am wondering the optimal methods to locate/test for/ fix the problem, ( light, wires, fuses, other? )
Can anyone give guidance in simple terms to trace/fix/upgrade the headlight? ( I'm a noob as to elertical and mechanical work/terms) .
I also would like to know the following if you can help with one or more. ..
1) The specs/model for the original headlight bulbs. Needed in case replacement must be bought.
2) The best one or two brighter than OEM bulbs that don't require other changes to the bike, i.e. wiring , etc.
3) The best way to give very best bright high beam light to the bike even if some other upgrades to wiring or other parts are required. are required.
4) Where are fuses for the headlight located, and is it smart to upgrade the fuse specs to some max as a part of having brighter headlights?
5) how to replace the bulb, open headlight compartment?
The original light seems very weak in some curvy and country night riding.
This bike is my only transportation, so loss of lights limits legal use a lot - to daytime. So, some fairly quick to do fix would be a tremendous help.

Kind of common when someone is slow on the dimmer switch and holds in between for a second. That puts both lights on and tends to blow the fuse. The stock fuse is a 10 amp glass style fuse and is located under the seat on top of or next to the battery. The wires for the head light fuse will be brown on one side and blue/white on the other side. Even if the fuse looks good at least take it out and put it back in. Many times they look good but aren't. If you have a voltmeter make sure it has voltage on both sides of the fuse when the keys is on. With the key off it will not get power. The stock Gen I headlight is an H4 55/60 watt bulb. You can find them in autoparts stores, Walmart, some convenience stores. The bulb is held in place with a goofy clip behind the rubber cover on the back of the headlight. I'm not in a good position to try to describe how it works but a flashlight and 3 minutes should be enough for you to figure it out if you need to do that tonight. To improve the headlights I'll suggest using relays. This isn't the post for explaining that either. Best,

I use a different version of pulse width modulator to control grip heaters, electric vest and other stuff. One could also use this to control brightness of other lights of either incandescent or LED.

And added thought to what Jeff was saying. Many of us went to a 15 amp fuse for the headlight system over 15 years ago. One of the first upgrades I did due to blowing the fuse being lazy and trying to see if I could play with the switch and have both lights on at the same time as I could do with my '82 XV920RH Yamaha.. I could not do that. LOL. But, after 15 yrs, still no problems even after changing out to blade type fuses several years back.

When posting questions it is helpful to know what generation is the bike, Gen1 or Gen2. Year will do.
There are significant differences between the two generations, such that one may as well be considering different bikes completely.
I noticed that Jeff assumed Gen1 but you referenced "headlight bulbs" which suggests Gen2.
What year is your bike?

PUN ALERT-just for the 'sake' of discussion;does new (sic) glasses @$450 count as frackle? ( What if I pay more? cough.)

$450 is the cost to change 1/2 diopter in my prescription; it has not changed in 3 years.Do you know you can buy 4 sets of Kenda 270's for that price. sigh.
Besides, headlights are overrated; cough.They only seem to attract deer, in my estimation/experience. shrug.

On my Gen 1 , I installed a Cyclops LED headlight. Draws 20 watts on low and 30 watts on high. 3,800 lumens of whiter color light. Gets to 85 degF compared to 390 degF for a H4 halogen on high after 5 min. Bulb has a small cooling fan on the back that requires a little dust cover trimming on some bikes. $65 from a small company in Tukwila,Washington. I am converting to these bulbs on the rest of my seven bikes in the future. Allows electrical output for other accessories and less stress on the stators. Worth a look anyway for a lighting option:

Its almost funny that I was asking Fred about this Cyclops LED light yesterday.
While Fred can provide the one from Cyclops (Studebaker), he mostly handles the one from Headwinds as it has fewer connections that could fail.

I upgraded to a slim Chinese HID setup. The only problem I had were the connections at the crimp fittings I installed; even though I soldered and heat shrinked. I recommend using thicker gauge wiring wherever you easily can especially where you make your own connections. Also, added a switch so I can cruise with no lights when off road during the day which probably helps charge the battery. I don't think LEDs put out near as much light as my HID setup. HIDs save juice also...but I admit LEDs are even more energy efficient. Jeffrey #3
