Pondering on this bearing failure. Only one I witnessed was a friend's Barbie Doll year Gen one having the same bearing go out. He ended up just having the motor swapped with an '06 low mileage unit. Very easy on his equipment, not a high speed or rpm guy and 10W40 oil changed often also.
Remember an article at one time stating the used of high vis motor oils was detrimental to engine designed oil flow and cooling of bearings. Which is a flag for not exceeding KLR's designed 10W40 recommended oil.
Remembering an old BMW mechanic when discussing BMW R11** GS rear drive bearing failure problems. I had put around 50K miles on two BMW GS's without a problem. His statement, " Either you have a bad bearing or you don't "  If I remember right , BMW recommended changing the rear fluid every 24K miles and I was doing it every 12K. Maybe that helped , maybe it didn't.
But, , as said, this is a very very low ratio failure so hard to point a finger at any one thing. Some , over 100K miles and no problems every, some 24K and break.
