While I was out of town someone managed to tickle my garage door opener just right and open sesame! There was my A13, key in the ignition, helmet on the mirror, gloves on the gas tank. Damn, I'm an accommodating feller. By the time I got home and found it missing, it could have been run ragged and pushed off a cliff, or parted out to, uh, parts unknown. Or it could at this very moment be hidden somewhere in this very neighborhood. Likely I will never know. I sure am glad I never named it.

Sad news! I keep my A14 in much the same state, with the key in it, when parked in the garage. I figure if I leave the key they won't destroy the lock with a screwdriver. The good thing about an A series KLR is that they are not a rare item and can be easily replaced, given funding. I hope the lowlife falls off the thing and breaks both thumbs, or worse.

I live in SoCal where there is a lot of crime but have been fortunate with my bikes in recent years. I think many thieves around here can't drive a stick, much less a motorcycle. I had two stolen in the 1980s, one Yamaha AT1 that was never recovered, and one CB360T that was recovered in a school yard, after being stripped of a few parts then burned. - ian

I had an inept thief try and take my 1989 Transalp about 16 years ago. They pushed it out of my backyard with me home and the back door wide open(!). After calling the police, I walked around the block looking for it and found my bike with the ignition cylinder completely destroyed. The tack hammer and $1 store flat blade screwdriver used where on the ground beside the bike where I guess the would-be thief gave up. Had he known, all he had to do was cut/cross the few wires leading to the ignition lock, start the bike and ride. The forks were unlocked. Did ya ever, change oil, put a new alu washer on the drain plug , not paying attention that it was a washer for the Suzy Bandit 1250s and it starts dripping. Hmmmmmmm. Catches on the edge as it's about a mil or so wider that needs to be. Sigh. To the grinder, ground to fit, flat file to even out the sides, a touch of silicone , reinstall, da leak is gone. So far. Must be an age thing!

FB has a Green, Gen 2, on it, saying it was found in OKC knocked over, and going to the Auction block in 90 days. WHAT?? No way for the Government to run the Vin # and find the owner? I guess I'm fortunate to live on a quiet street in a quiet town (Lititz, PA) where crime is almost nonexistent. We frequently leave bikes sitting out front overnight in the summer time - sometimes I even forget to pull the keys out - and they're never touched.

The adults AND the kids in the neighborhood are polite and watchful, they'll immediately spot anyone who "doesn't belong" and say something.

The largest "criminal" act so far this year was a week ago, I was behind a row of shrubs and the passenger of a car driving by threw an empty Big Gulp cup out the window and into the yard - it landed 10 feet from me. They didn't see me. My truck was nearby, with the keys hanging from the ignition. In a small flash of anger, I grabbed the cup, ran to my truck, and followed the car one street over. By then I decided that I didn't want a confrontation, but late that night, I placed a note in the cup written "You forgot your cup!" and placed it on the hood of the Volvo that it was thrown from.

My wife still has her residence in California. Small town (Lemoore), about the same size as here, but crime is much more prevalent. If you leave anything in the front yard - footballs, scooters, whatever - it will disappear very quickly. I have a KLR out there, which is now my lowest mileage bike - 2006 in that "one year only" Kawasaki green - and it has only 4,000 miles on it. I have to be reminded constantly to take the key out if I park it in the driveway, even if it's only going to be for a short time. It's kind of an alien concept to me. But, Lemoore is a nice town and a good starting point for rides into the Sierras or over to the Coast. The flat, hot, dusty Central Valley is not very exciting for riding, but the closest twisties are a 35 mile, straight as an arrow ride to Coalinga, where the fun can start.

Perhaps it's a cost issue as some of these government processes are incredibly expensive because of the required oversight. I recall talking with the head of finance for a college where I taught. We had three levels of purchase: cash- up to $20.00; local purchase order - from $20.00 to less than $200.00; general purchase order - $200.00 or over. A program head could authorize cash purchase; a dean or department head could authorize a local purchase order; general PO had to come from finance department. She explained that a local PO cost about $200.00 to process which rocked my world since this automatically added $200.00 to the cost. I suggested that it would be better to leave some cash in a pail in the staff room where staff could recover their expenditure and leave the invoice. She laughed and agreed that, given the unlikely event that there would be any significant theft, it would still be much cheaper for the taxpayer. Problem is: we demand such high scrutiny on public expenditures that we more often than not are shooting ourselves in the foot. A recent scream by Canadians over senate expenses lead to the demanded audit of senators' expense accounts. Result: recovered about a million dollars in unaccepted expenses; cost of the audit $23million. Sometimes I think that those in the insane asylums may be better able to run things than the public/
