Thank you for the insight. I see you have looked at it from both sides , as I have.
No it needs nothing else, I stayed on top of maintenance and repairs.
The mileage is correct .. 154k on the odo.
On last thing .. I work for an insurance company that insures among other things, motorcycles. They insure mine and have for 16 years since I bought the used bike with 2k miles on it. I know the book value, yet I keep comp and collision on it. Go figure.

as my daddy would say, 'at that many miles, it didn't owe you any money'
Your question is the one we should ask every time we do a major repair.
Repair, or sell the parts:
1. Before you do a repair, count all the cost you put into the bike, and then ask yourself,
(knowing that an engine cost = $600, this is the price of a 2001, 3500 mile engine sitting in NC))
"Would I buy this bike for $600?
A local bike (mine) became an oil burner...did a 685 kit, carb rebuild, and a few other items needing repair ~$600.
I felt the repair would essentially buy back my 1998, 56K mile back for $600.
2. Then look to see what NADA value is at this present time for a 1996 KLR650; low retail $770; avg retail $1015.
Now consider a KLR with 150K miles on the clock...of course, it only indicates 50K...cough.
Pause for moment,
Let us see a show of hands that would buy a KLR with 150K miles on it...
I remember a time I would shy away from one with 6K on it!...then bought one with 20K miles/4 owners...which probably proved to be why it needed a cylinder early in its life; yet I digress.
anyway,
Then put on your insurance hat: knowing for certain, if it is destroyed in an accident, (most likely) the maximum value you will be reimbursed is NADA value, and lucky if you see that. If the insurance man figures in the mileage, the value will not likely even approach low retail.
the sell it:
3. With fairly new tires, you might get as much as $500 for a set of wheels; exceeding the replacement value of your bike. shrug.
Or, you might get as little as $80 a wheel and tire. AMHIK. I recently got almost new D606 tires, wheels, disc, sprocket/carrier for $80each. shrug.
You have the frame, carb, and head, perhaps the forks, axles, and switches.
IMO, You have the potential to bring about $1K in parts...to the right person(s) even more.
One last consideration...
does it need anything else? that is going to cost money to get it up to snuff?
m1.

With 154k on the odo, at 70 mph, the little 650 motor went south. Being as it is kinda old, I will look to the group for advise.
I am certain it is worth more parted out than fixed. New handlebar, stainless steel brake lines, fork brace, Givi side and top bags, not a scratch in the tank or colors - except where the exhaust maybe melted the fender a little. I got a new front and almost new rear along with all the suspense being done.
Or ....
I find a used 650 and put it in. I looked in AZ ... no good 650 motors to be found and the one in the bike goes .... bang ... bang .... bang ... when you hit the starter.
Clueless in Phoenix ...
Well not really clueless, just looking for input.
