Design teams are not always coordinated...Our 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis has an oil filter that cannot easily be removed with the wheels turned straight ahead.Try that while it is up on Ramps...And of course it drips oil all over the steering mechanics during an oil change and drips on the floor for hours afterwards. sigh.
short story--Beechcraft/Raytheon decided on a new aircraft build. In most processes, the builder just uses what is available = 'industry standard', when buying accessories, such as pumps and generators. The engine they selected for one of the jets (I forget which one) had an accessory section where the pumps and generators are bolted was problematic and difficult to access, so much so, that it would have taken 4+ hours to change a 'industry standard' generator.
They went back to the manufacture and said, 'if you want to sell Raytheon generators, it needs this bolt pattern, etc " which would make the installation easier (with the engine in place). The manufacture complied and the generators, new bolt pattern would only take 15 minutes to remove the generator.
in my observation, for the most part, the maintenance aspect is far down the list over the ease of manufacture = it is business as usual, pull what ever is off the shelf and bolt it together. If they would let a group of field testers like the fine group of people here, they would know what would work...
It only took 20 years of field testing-ownership to get a Gen II KLR.The new cowling is sexy, but is it really better? shrug.

ya, kinda like putting the engine drain plug below the frame. Surely no one in their right mind would ever do something like that... Fred

Anything with exhaust pipes on the bottom is not gonna cut it off road.

Thanks Fred, I don't expect to see many Bulldogs in Kane Creek. Though trying it with a half dozen of them might make for a good Honda promo... Randy Sent from my Verizon Wireless 4G LTE smartphone
