2014 side stand folded up

Just read a report of a 2014 which had the side stand fold in the middle of the stand tube and the bike fell over. Never heard of any side stand failures on any KLR's excepting those who allowed the bolt to be loose. Anyone hear of this as an issue?

It would be interesting to actually let you see the failure; likely would shed a lot of light on the problem. Never heard of a side stand folding in the middle;but a couple of things come to mind:1. The stand was shortened/lengthened improperly 2. A large person has been using the left foot peg for a stirrup and has put undue strain on the sidestand after numerous mounts/dismounts. It may have been a manufacturing defect, but doubtful.m.

Here is the latest bit of information"   "He is 240 6 feet. No weight on the bike other than him as it was just a short day trip. He does step on the peg on occasion to mount. When his bike went over he was halfway off. It really tweeked his back. I was parking and it came over on me knocking me over too pinning my foot between the shifter and my peg on my bike. This was my first time out after back surgery in September."   I've asked if the old and new side stands can be weighed. It was suggested that lighter tubing might have found its way into a production run. It would certainly explain much.   ------ Original Message ------ From: "Martin Earl" To: "Norm Keller" Sent: 2015-03-09 7:27:10 PM Subject: Re: [DSN_KLR650] 2014 side stand folded up
The Gen 2 sidestand does not look as robust as a Gen1. Of course, the bends in the sidestand appears to weaken the process. m1. I think I qualify as a "large person" and I've been using my foot peg and sidestand like that for years and never broke one.   The "fork" at the top of the sidestand where it attaches to the frame eventually spreads out a litte, just put it in a vise and squeeze it back together every year or so. nklr- think the klr is too big and heavy?

Hi Paul,My comment about the large, some might say 'robust individual' mounting the bike like a horse has two entirely different parameters =shaped sidestands..Our beloved KLR Tupperware model uses a straight pull side stand. The wanna-be Ricky Crotch Rocket Gen 2 has a side stand with S-curve/chicane in it.In the photo Norm posted, it looks like it bent/failed at one of the N. end of the chicane. I still think the side stand failed because of repeat horse-mounts. shrug.but I could be wrong.m1.p.s. enjoyed your Mexico report

To be honest, I have never liked that S bend Kawasaki put on the Gen 2 KLRs. Thinking, That's gotta give with heavy weight on it.
That said, I've been mounting my bikes for many years using the left peg to gain height to swing my short legs over the saddle and or load strapped onto the passengers seat when on tour. My weight has varied from 255 loaded to 200 unloaded in the 15 years on this Gen 1 KLR and never a problem yet.
I wonder if a person could make a straight shaft work on the Gen 2?
I had cut an inch off my side stand years ago when installing 1" lower links. But, later went back to stock links and added that inch back. Then , later cutting all but about 6 or so inches off the the bottom and using a section of old handlebars, redid the bottom part with a 14 tooth sprocket as the foot. Did this about 3 years ago and so far. no problems.
