From what I have learned Mike, both data and power run down the line to the bulb. Any changes (such as a line tap drawing even small power) anywhere in this circuit, are picked up by the CANbus/computer and create problems. This seems to be why the dealership must reprogram the computer to different parameters.
The way Clearwater gets past this with their CAN-opener is that their plug-n-play device sniffs (for lack of a better word) the data going down the line and uses the data for an independent electronic trigger of their relay. Apparently this sniffing doesn't change voltage or resistance so CANbus/computer are happy. It's a nice idea but not worth $700 for their light kit just to get the CAN-opener when we already have a Denali D2 kit.
Thanks Mike.
While I have an older GSA, this kind of stuff is also why I have a KLR and DRZ for some things. My friend with this bike emptied his garage of the Duc/Honda/1100RT to get into this one GSW and wants it to work right. He will just have to get the dealer involved to accomplish this.

Randy...Rather than going through the switched CAN bus, I'm wondering if you could come right off the high beam wire at the light to trigger a relay to turn on the LEDs?
Check it at the hi beam with a testlight to see if it has + 12v when the high beam is switched on , and tie it into the trigger coil on the relay and run the LEDs to the relay switched contacts.

Randy...He's going to have to take it to the dealer to have it programmed....A friend of mine had to go through the same deal last year.....If he wants to hook it up to the battery and a separate switch it's not a problem.

Hi Norm,
I have a riding buddy with a new 2014 R1200 GS he is wanting to put additional LED driving lights on. He wants them tied into the high beam switch and neither of us can find info about how to do this with the CANbus system.
Do you have any ideas about where to look?
Thanks,Randy

Where are you located, James? Maybe someone nearby can help.
