KLRistas! After a decade and a half at a lil ‘ole software factory in the Great Northwet I just accepted a generous layoff/early retirement package. I’m sending this from seat 4D at 38,000 feet over Colorado on the way home from my *final* business trip. Today, September 19th, 2014 is *Emancipation Day!* To celebrate my very own Emancipation Proclamation, I’m thinking about spending October retracing the route from the movie Easy Rider. My “plan”- if I dare call it a plan- is to visit *all* the movie locations that I can identify, riding to each of the places where scenes in the movie was shot. So roughly Los Angeles to New Orleans via a wandering but generally eastbound route. I’d start the ride from my home near Seattle but would deem the SEA-LA portion just a brief ride to the Official Starting Line. J If you pick up the *DVD* of the movie (not Netflix etc) you will find that there are actually *three* versions of the movie on the disc. One version has the soundtrack audio attenuated about 20 dB with Dennis Hopper (RIP) -the co-star and movie director- providing a voice-over describing where they shot the various scenes. I’ve ridden to and through many of them: the ghost town of Ballarat, CA (in Death Valley NP), the Navajo Nation (near the four-corners area), Las Vegas, NM (not a typo, *not* Lost Wages, NV), the Anasazi Country not far from list moderator/ KLR legend Fred’s Arrowhead Motorsports in Moab etc. I’ve been “bagging” Easy Rider locations for a decade if and as my spare time and travels permit but now that I have a bit more “spare” time I want to ride to ALL of them in one ride. If anyone has identified any movie locations I haven’t identified I’d certainly appreciate the help finding *all* the locations. If you haven’t seen Easy Rider lately (or ever) you might want to check it out: it’s basically a “modern” (70s) take on the themes of classic western movies with the two outlaws on the run from….you get the idea. Think Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid on panhead Harleys rather than horses; horsepower rather than horse-power. Also if someone wants to suggest “must see” non-movie locations on my intended route I’d love to hear about those locations as well. JRR Tolkien was right, not all that wander are lost! I’ve spent much of the past 14 plus years of my life striving to make the internet a safer place for all us netizens. Frankly, some of that time has felt a bit like what us geeks call “iterating an endless loop”. I aspire to spend the next 14 or so years iterating a new endless loop: *Read, Ride, Write, Repeat*. Leaving this without a “NKLR” since I am tending towards riding my “new” (’07) KLR but might end up on the WeeStrom instead if once I get the route refined I find the route or timeframe better suited for the Wee.

Congrats!
It has been an interesting period of introspection and consultation for me. I hope that you enjoy your retirement even more than I do.
Please post back after a bit with impressions.

Great project you have in mind. The end of the story comes from South Louisiana, near the town of Krotz Springs on the Atchafalaya River and LA 105 going North to Melville, La. Not sure of the exact spot for shooting but do run that road about once a year as it's a beautiful ride on any bike. And you could cover that area on your trip to New Orleans.

This is the biggest reason that I do all my own work on my bikes....I
know exactly what I'm getting, and know how the work was performed.
Instead of the valves being "ok", I know exactly what that ok means.
