Hey
As posted a few days ago. I'm about to ride 3'500- 4000 miles 99.5% pavement.   (& a few times on Freeways)
So doing pavement I wondered about trying out the larger Front Sprocket, for lower RPM's & smoother ride.
Do I NEED TO also change the Chain to add a few links, Or should the stock Size work?

Mi. to Indianapolis IN., & Roughly to Corbin or Knoxville tn.? Then Valdese NC., UP to Chesapeake bay bridge/tunnel Down the coastline to mid NC back to Valdese, then WONDER back to West Mich.

A 13T to a 16T will work with the stock 43T rear sprocket and the stock 106 link chain. I have a 16 on the Front for most everyday riding, if I were to so some serious off roading I may put the 14 on for that but only done that once in the last 2 years. Michael

I'd go with the 16 front for that trip and no you don't have to change the chain length. I;'ve  run from 16 to 14 but now as just staying local with a lot of stop and go and back country roads, staying with the 15T.  Have to ride the clutch too much for my slow going with the 16 and shift too much with the 14.

Hi All,
I have a KLR650C8 on which I ran a 14/42 combination for a while, it was OK but it made the revs in 1st gear a little high and 2nd gear a bit low. I have now gone to the standard gearing of 15/43.
Last weekend I did 400miles of mostly tar but some quite tricky dirt road which included steep ascent and descents using mostly 1st and 2nd. This combination worked well for the highway and the dirt. i was also loaded up with camping gear that weighed about 40lb or so.
I will continue to use this setup.

Cheers
Glenn

I guess I can count my self LUCKY, Not only am I Dyslexic I have A.A.D., So I often forget what was wrong. On Wednesday, September 17, 2014 12:19 PM, "'Ateam Consulting' ateam@... [DSN_KLR650]" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> wrote:

I am going to ride the Chief Joseph Highway, and cross the Bear Tooth Pass on Thursday. Then I am going to tell tall tales by the campfire with KLR Ross L of Williston, ND, When we get tired of that, about 0800 on Friday, the KLR will reverse the direction and RIDE the two passes, Again, on Friday. No, I won't be thinking about all you KiLeRista's at work. not once. So there.   Did I mention the bear spray? Old white guys taste like chicken. cough.   yeah, DOT, DOD toemaytoe, tomaaatoe   Fred, please answer the phone if I call. HEY! (I usually do. sigh)   Judd- I took 1/3 off and then put it back. Sept in MT/WY is a crap shoot. Sept of 2008m the Wx nearly trapped the KLRbugeater and I while crossing Union Pass; started snowing 4 hours before the forecast and it become unpleasant to say the least.  It rapidly became dicey, ; We were pretty wet, and John was in early stages of hypothermia, and I was not far! behind him.  It had taken us 4.5 hours to go what the locals said was a 90 min trip, it what turned out to be a blizzard just as we reached the pass.  Not interested in THAT again.  Just a tad to much adventure...a tad to much adversity.   IRT to Mark/short of tires-- I feel your pain.   I ruined a nearly new K270 with a 20p nail through a sidewall...fortunately, I had a full set of tires on the shelf, and was riding again the next day. At the time, I lived 50 miles from the nearest MC shop, and doubtful they had tires either. so, I learned early on-- I keep a set of consumables = tires, a chain, sprocket set, tubes, oil, filters for any bike, all the time. When that 'spare' set is installed, I (nearly) immediately replace them. shrug. That is just me. Right now there are two full sets of KLR tires, and a full set of tires suitable for the dirt bikes.    IMO, Our riding season is to short to waste a day(s) waiting on a tire, tube, or chain. Chains and tubes are almost always available, no so much for the other things.   2010, I got a new front tire in Cody, WY. Only one appropriate 21" tire in the town, I got the only tire. Imagine the poor guy that followed me into town that day. He would have to wait 3-5 days for Rocky-Tucker-Rocky to resupply the MC shop; or pay a big fee for next day air.   If I had had good sense, I would have started with a brand new tire in 2010 before heading out.... tomorrow, it has a nearly new rear, and a fresh front.   Film at 11.   revmaaatin.    On Tue, Sep 16, 2014 at 6:41 PM, Fred Hink wrote: Dept Of Defense or Dept Of Transportation?   Lemme know where you get your DOD tires, when the $hit hits fan, those maybe be necessary.     Fred http://www.arrowheadmotorsports.com       From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tuesday, September 16, 2014 6:12 PM To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com ; nomad59@...
