THAT in-and-of-itself is a WHOLE NUTHER can of worms. Riding without any
 chain lube.

I'm a dirt bike guy, and we lube our chains, every ride. Being in the
dirt the entire time, sure stuff gets stuck to them, but so what. You
can clean them, and lube them again.

You run into issues if you don't lube the chain. They can overheat and
fail. In my experience they wear out a lot quicker with no oil. The
oiled ones last longer (for me), even with the junk gummed up on them. I
don't want a chain failure when I'm in the middle of nowhere on the KLR
or CRF. There are some people that would rather replace the chain early,
than oil it and get oil on their bike, and that's fine, I'm just not in
 that camp.

While not an app, the Ram X-Mount of an awesome phone holder for
motorcycles. I have it, and love it.

I actually don't use any bike specific apps, and I've had smart phones
for a long time. I do however have a power port in the front fairing so
I can plug the Droid in while riding. Makes it easier to use things like
 Google Maps for longer travels.

The only app I have that would be beneficial to me while riding is a GPS
dashboard type app. I have one where you can configure 8 fields to show
elevation, speed, time, etc, etc. I really like that in-lieu of my real GPS.
