death of a battery............

Post by eddiebmauri » Tue Jun 17, 2014 9:10 pm

I tend to leave my KLR connected to a trickle charger.  A few days ago my battery was dead.  FYI, I had disconnected the charger for a few days prior to it dying. I pulled the battery today and it was bone dry.  I have to admit that I had not checked the battery juice level in quite a while.  I use a slosh battery from Wal Mart.
So, my question; "In your best guess, did the charger cook the battery over time, or is more likely that it dried over time due (muttering - due to my negligence)."
In my defense, the battery was about two + years old.  So it was about time anyway.

death of a battery............

Post by Fred Hink » Wed Jun 18, 2014 11:58 am

What kind of charger did you use?  There are lots of different types of trickle chargers out there.  Some trickle charges never shut off and even at a half amp can over charge a battery if left connected.  The floating ground type of charge (like a Battery Tender and others) will shut off when a max charge is reached and then maintain the battery at this peak condition.   I d like to hear what success or not anyone has had with the new Lithium Ion batteries.  I believe when they become cheaper (and they will) that these will be the next new thing in batteries for most vehicles.   Fred http://www.arrowheadmotorsports.com   From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tuesday, June 17, 2014 8:07 PM To: dsn_klr650@yahoogroups.com Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Death of a Battery............

Hi guys, Here are all the parts left that I want to sell. Instead of listing them all, I've taken pictures and have loaded them onto shutter fly. You can access them by going here. or here. http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=2AauHLJo2bOHOA&emid=shareprintsharer&linkid=link5&cid=EM_sharshar Please, if you see something that you would like, make a reasonable offer and you probably will get it. I have a job and am very busy so I may not be able to get right back to you. However, I am moving and I won't be taking this with me. Check out the pics and let me know what you desire. I'm located in San Antonio, TX 78250. Thanks.-- Roger

death of a battery............

Post by secarver7 » Tue Jun 24, 2014 12:53 am

I've had better luck with AGM batteries in motorcycles. Checking fluid levels in normal lead-acid tends to be a PITA and can be over-looked. If the bike is flopped for any length of time, the end cell can be partially drained. AGM, for me, have worked reliably 100% of the time.  They don't require much maintence, can stand being flipped, and have recovered from low voltage drains (down to 4.6 volt) without showing much, if any, loss of cranking power. I've had 3 lithium. The first failed to take and hold an effective in a KLR after about three months.  It may have suffered some direct shorting.  Another failed in about 15 months in a Husaberg FE 570.  It went down hill fairly fast at the end and nearly left me stranded a long walk into the sierras. I don't like messing with batteries.  Reliability matters alot.  AGM has proved superior to both lead-acid and Lithium for me.  I use the "Battery Tender jr." and have the "Battery Tender" "flat-2" connector wired directly to the battery on all my bikes, the lead being run forward & accessable near the fork/ tank/ handlebar area . When riding, I connect this terminal to power 12 v socket and/or 12V. accy. stuff on the handlebars.   I have jumped other bikes and autos from this connector.   When garaged I disconnect this junction.  If I haven't ridden for 2-3 months, I connect the "Battery Tender jr." for a couple of days, checking the voltage before charge & allowing a day for the "surface charge" to wear off after the boost.  This gives me an idea of drain.  The AGM drain has been negligible. led-acid & Lithium have been variable and iffy. -StoneTail
