FYI, I had disconnected the charger for a few days prior to it dying. I pulled the battery today and it was bone dry. I have to admit that I had not checked the battery juice level in quite a while. I use a slosh battery from Wal Mart.
So, my question; "In your best guess, did the charger cook the battery over time, or is more likely that it dried over time due (muttering - due to my negligence)."
In my defense, the battery was about two + years old. So it was about time anyway.

<><><><><><> <><><><><><> Anonymous, Probably a combination of charging all the time and not checking the fluid level. RevMaaatin and I have both used Walmart batteries. Usually they last 3 and sometimes 4 years in a KLR. I've had very good luck taking care of batteries by only putting them on a trickle charger when they are below 12.4 volts. I monitor the voltage as they charge and once they stabilize at 13.20 volts or very close to that I remove the trickle charger. I then monitor the battery voltage and don't put the trickle charger on again until the voltage is below 12.4 volts. I'm doing that right now with a battery that came in a riding lawn mower I just bought. As of a few minutes ago the voltage was at 12.75 volts. I'm guessing in the morning it will be stabilized and I'll then be able to reinstall and use the mower. I also have a AGM battery that I bought in fall of 1999. That puts it at 15 years and it still is a good battery. Last winter it was put on the charger twice if I recall correctly. I keep that battery around just to see how long it will last. I know this is the exception and not the rule for battery life. Until today it has been used for the last 9 years in a riding lawn mower. It never saw a charger in mowing season. My truck hardly ever gets used and the battery for it is 9 years old. Doesn't hold a charge as long as the 15 year battery but it is still working. Only time it sees a charger is when the voltage gets low. So maybe consider monitoring battery voltage and only charging as needed. And also monitor fluid level and top with distilled water as needed. Best,
