I haven't done the doohickey yet on my new engine from US Marine Corps Barstow Logistics...it seemed like new when I installed...My old engine did have a doohickey blow up despite having upgraded the doohickey and even opening it up an extra time to put the shorter spring in. So, while I think the factory doohickey is lame, I also think there is a chain stretch issue and that is why mine blew despite having enough oil(though it got low but not that low) and despite having the doohickey upgrade.
I doubt any serious need to upgrade the doohickey till 20k miles. Even if stock doohickey isn't putting any or much tension on...the failure won't happen till you get more slop.
