"Trusting" Engineers?
I DOO (pun intended) trust them to a point, But as a service tech. I seen WAY TO MUCH Warranty work, and cash jobs, DOO TO, THE CORPORATE CEO's saying let it be, when the Engineers realize, there IS AN ISSUE.
Years ago, the Government had to step in and FORCE GE to extend there warranty on a refrigerator compressor that was,...... well designed by the Engineers, BUTT the factory making the impeller, (parts) chose to use a different metal, that broke down in the oil, ....... greatly shortening the life of the compressor.
My Doo was not, broken, BUT I took great care to not over tighten the adjuster bolt, VERY LITTLE tension needed on that bolt.
BUTT, My spring on the D. H. was completely compressed WITH NO TENSION ON IT. So the DOO was worthless as it,
AND SINCE THE STOCK DOO IS WEAK. I INSTALLED THE NEW DOO, I GOT FROM FRED.

I wouldn't .. Only because I have confidence in Kawasaki's engineers. But at the same rate, I don't know enough about the failure rates of the stock setup vs. the aftermarket design since I don't own a KLR. Just looking at some photos of the design (that are numerous) .. It seems that replacing the chain before it gets loose is a better strategy. The increased tension (which the doohickey seems to address) appears to be compensating for a worn chain. The chain probably lasts, what, 30K miles? So replace it once. By the time you reach 60K you'll be ready for a new bike. It would take me 20 years to ride 60K on one single motorcycle.
So if you want to exceed 30K on one chain, go ahead and replace it. Once. Tightening the tensioner excessively to compensate for a worn chain isn't a good solution. The stock tensioner is meant to stop holding a loose chain tight, letting it slop around, and telling the owner it's time to replace the chain, not the tensioner.
It can't cost that much.
Just checked .. it's $300. That's a little high.
