That includes many, many hours of desert freeways at close to 100 degrees, dirt, gravel, some sand etc. (BLM lands and forest roads around the region). Predominantly dryer conditions, but I always felt secure even with strong cross winds and the occasional rainstorm and they lasted many miles. Not good in slushy, muddy snowmelt, but then I never really expected that from an 80/20. They also seem to be very reasonably priced. Korean made off of former Yokohama designs, if I recall correctly. Don't chunk like the MT70, and not squirrely like the K270. Heinedau (sp) were solid but at twice the cost +/- and the last 2K you were riding on diminished though long lasting tread. 3.5 to 4K on the rears in Central Oregon cinders. YMMV. Todd

If you really do 80 road and minor off road, these rule. They would stink in mud, but are fine in dirt. I am getting more and more off road, so in about 8,000 more miles I will switch to the 60's but you might prefer the 76's. Ps my RPM's dropped about 1500 for same speed as stock, and mpg went up too. I use a general purpose automotive chassis grease for lubricating speedo drives, axle coatings, suspension, steering head. The grease you choose should be water proof and have EP (extreme pressure) rating. Don't bother considering lithium, or other factors because the carrier is not pertinent to the service. People become distracted by factors such as lithium (base), moly (content), etc. rather than to consider the NLGI service rating. An NLGI #2 rated grease is usually the ideal choice for motorcycle service. I look for a grease which is rated for wheel bearings (disk brake wheel bearing service) because these greases are compatible with rolling element bearings and high temperatures; the grease also needs be rated for chassis lubrication which means ball joints, tie rods, swing arm bearings, because these have sliding friction; water proof and rust prevention are also critical. I see many people using expensive "fashion designer" greases off bike store shelves or those with catchy names and wild claims but these do not perform as well as the popular "work horse" products used by service professionals. With disassembly, I believe I put everything together right, but the speedo drive itself is jamming and caused the damage. The tangs of the steel drive plate are embedded in the speedo gear carrier - look like it took some force. I like the TrailTech idea. Still, I'd like an odometer on the bike to track maintenance. thanks! We did a fuel delivery test on it since he has a stock petcock with the vacuum shutoff still intact. The tank had been filled about 75 miles earlier. We connected a Mity-Vac to the vacuum port on the petcock and a three foot length of 7mm ID fuel line. We had two 1/2 gallon containers and filled the first one in 90 seconds and then just moved the fuel line to the other container without stopping the fuel flow. The second was full for a total of one gallon in 2 minutes and 58 seconds. Let's call it three gallons a minute. We could hear the fuel cap vent working (quite a sucking sound) after about 15 seconds and the fuel cap was closed for the entire test. So if you do a fuel delivery test maybe figure on one gallon of fuel every four minutes or less. This is the first time I've ever timed/measured fuel delivery on a KLR so this is only a sample of one. Hey Fred? remind me how a new person gets started on the emailing list.   I have a friend here in West Mi. who travels the world and about to head to the Rockies, (NW of Denver ETC. & Moab area, who will need pointers on what is MUST SEE/RIDE areas.   I know John B. has been in ALLLLL these areas.     (Rob I cCC,ed you hoping it takes you into it ALL.)     I WONDER and explore so much, sometimes I do not know where all I have been, especially on a map.
