They also supposedly checked the valves twice and said they were correct. My friend is mechanically adept. Any idea? When hot fan came on, kept idling, turned Hi beam on as well, kept idling. gave it a few revs, kept idling. Turned Hi beam off, temp came down, fan switched off. I really hate to say this and not an insult at all.  

[*]Is the gas on? Is the choke off? Have you checked the kill switch, not likely but I had a mystery with a Gas Gas, similar thing and it was a loose contact in the kill switch button. Is the vent tube on the carb clogged?  The one hanging off the carb. Do you have a fuel filter on the fuel line? Have you tried running the bike with the gas cap off? No exposed wire somewhere grounding itself?

Just throwing out ideas, man oh man I know how frustrating things like this can be.  It is usually the most simple thing in the world and always the last thing you checked.....   Good Luck and keep us posted.  Ateam   [b]From:[/b] moabmc@... I’d check the float level, maybe the float valve is not shutting off properly.

 

Get a foot of transparent (or translucent) fuel line hose and attach it to the drain fitting at the bottom of the carb.  Route the other end of the hose up, so that the hose looks like a capital letter J with the top of the hose well above the gasket in the carb that marks the junction between the float bowl and the main  body of the carb.  Open the carb bowl drain.  The level of the fuel in the J-shaped hose should closely match the level  of the seam in the carb.  Run the bike through the process described below and see if the float level changes.  It should not change.

 

If the float level is too high or varies then clean the float bowl and/or replace the float valve. 

 

Same thing happened to one of my riding buddies in Baja.  We pulled the bottom of the carb, dumped out a teaspoon of sand and the float level was correct from that point forward.  We picked up the sand buying fuel out of plastic barrels from roadside entrepreneurs who set up “gas stations” where Pemex didn’t have any.  It doesn’t take much grit to erode the float valve seat or to keep the valve from seating.

It's been a nightmare and has cost him over $800 at Power Yamaha in Sublimity, OR , plus more for parts he has ordered and tried and still no definitive answers or results. They also supposedly checked the valves twice and said they were correct. My friend is mechanically adept. Any idea?

Installed the new regulator, put tank back on. Turned fuel on, gave it full choke, hit the starter and it started easier than ever, got it warmed up a little shut choke off. Idle settled at around 1500.

When hot fan came on, kept idling, turned Hi beam on as well, kept idling. gave it a few revs, kept idling. Turned Hi beam off, temp came down, fan switched off. Bike kept idling for a couple minutes and the the damn thing started to die. SAME AS BEFORE. Turned idle screw in, idled for a few seconds, started to die, did this adjustment a bit more to bring up idle, died again.

 

I am about ready to give up and donate it. I have replaced the spark plug twice, new coil, new regulator, changed vacuum line a few times. installed new carb, new air filter, installed mixture adjustment screw. Plus new cam chain tensioner installed and two valve checks by dealer. Blah, Blah Blah.

 

Did all the Fluke Meter checks on Stator and Regulator per manual, dealer and by electric expert recommended on KLR Forum. kept idling, kept idling kept idling did it respond to throttle and rev up? maybe the idle screw was really backed way out. Is the regulator blown again i.e. a short is killing it? Or #2 below, the choke is not actually off when you think it is ? cuz the cable is pulled , or maybe the carb boot is loose and it s turned. or #4, below., the hose is kinked. Sounds like it runs about the same length of time it takes to use up all the gas in the carb bowl.  Please correct me if I’m wrong here.

Plus new cam chain tensioner installed and two valve checks by dealer. Blah, Blah Blah.

 

Did all the Fluke Meter checks on Stator and Regulator per manual, dealer and by electric expert recommended on KLR Forum. Regulator was bad and it obviously made a difference because it did not die on me with the fan on and Hi Beam on. Didn't miss a beat until it cooled down a bit, then died !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How ironic is that.

 

Did you ever ask your KLR expert friend what he thought, I would be very willing to pay him to take a look, I am now at a total loss on what to try next. The dealer is my very last resort.

I guess you are talking to me so here goes......, Thanks by the way for leaving off the "letters" after your name. From the tone of your post it was obvious anyway. (Arrogance does not become you by the way) I never claimed to be an expert on climate change and as a matter of fact I specifically said so. I do have a science background but nothing extra ordinary in that regard. I am however curious, coupled with what I hope is a healthy dose of common sense. I have looked at the data myself (which is not rocket science) and have made up my own mind which I strongly suggest everyone else do as well. If you make all your conclusions based on what you read in the NYT you will NOT learn the truth. (There is a great article in this months Popular Mechanics by Sarah Fecht titled Junk Science: flawed studies, agenda driven research, and open door journals are putting the public at risk.) As for your "challenge" to debunk your notated (overwhelming!) peer reviewed studies I would only reiterate what I have already stated and to simply add that 50 people in a room calling a cat a dog does not make it a dog. I'm not trying to change your mind. As a matter of fact, if you feel so strongly that man is ruining the planet, I welcome you to destroy all your carbon emitting machines. Start walking.
