speedometer woes

I had a Kawasaki 500 triple that I "converted" to low bars and I took off all the gauges and oil injection and anything that weighed more than I wanted to carry, including the centerstand which was dangerous to have on there, I can tell you that for sure. I also "five-ported" the barrels and modified the piston. A fellow named Carl Cranke http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Cranke did it for me in Sacramento. I shifted when it started to "slow down" or "flatten out". Trouble was, that was so far above redline that the alternator grenaded within a few runs. Fun, for a day or two. Then the battery ran down and you need another alternator. It was blue. Sniff. Robert Wichert P.Eng. LEED AP BD&C +1 916 966 9060 FAX +1 916 966 9068 ===============================================

Funny about the tach. I talked to a drag bike guy once telling I noticed no tach on his machine. He laughed and said he had done it so long, he knew when to shift. He had a button / air shifter. They work pretty good and don't cost much. Would take bit of fab work to make it look right. Not having a tach isn't that big of deal on a KLR IMO. Street trackers and some dual sport bikes use this set-up. Not OEM but definitely an alternative.
