I was having problems starting on my '99 recently and got so bad I was afraid I would be stranded somewhere. Me and a friend diasbled the sidestand safety switch and the clutch release safety switch. Didn't help. Then I replaced the starter button assembly. Bingo! Problem solved. The old one was pretty dirty. Some suggested try and clean it....but I like new with start buttons. Since doing that, my nuetral green light which was staying on all the time even in gear after replacing that little sender thing by the countershaft sprocket.....it is working correctly now. Sometimes I think installing a kick start lever like a friend did on his would be a good idea. You can push start these bikes but it isn't that easy if you don't have it on a hill. Criswell

Second guess will be a poor connection at the starter circuit relay or starter solenoid. On a Gen I KLR they are both located under the black plastic cover above the left footpeg. On Gen II KLRs the starter solenoid is under the black plastic cover above the left footpeg. The starter circuit relay is located under the fairing near the speedometer. If you need further help in this area let us know the year of the bike as the systems are different between the Gen I and Gen II models. For the speedo it could need lube or it might be a cable. But I'll guess it is the speedo instrument that needs cleaning/lube. I use sewing machine oil or 3 in 1 oil when I lube them. Just a drop is usually all it takes. More just makes a mess. Push starting seemed REAL EASY, TO ME, I just sat on the Bike, as the other guys 2 PUSHED. (while GRUNTING and GROANING)
