klr shock in guatemala

Post by Fred Hink » Fri Oct 11, 2013 10:33 pm

I have a friend in Antigua Guatemala that has blown the shock on their KLR.  Does anyone know of a suspension specialist or motorcycle shop in Guatemala that can help out my friend?  A used shock would also work as time is of prime importance for now.  If you have any contact information, please let me know.   Thanks, Fred http://www.arrowheadmotorsports.com

I was told to try the BMW dealer in Guatemala city.   My friend is IN South America Now, and has made SEVERAL trips down.   He is now taking a new KLR to Peru, to DONATE it to a group that teach's guys in wheelchairs, etc how to work on Dual-sport bikes. (dual-sport tours BIG business in the area.)

klr shock in guatemala

I got a new KLR shock in Antigua a couple of years ago. It was remarkably easy (although about US$500). Took a day to get the part from Guatemala City. This was the easiest place to find KLR parts south of the border and north of Bogota. I'm not home right now and can't remember the details. There is a motorbike rental/guided tour shop in the northern part of town, very well known and long-established, which also happens to serve very good coffee out front; they connected me with their favorite mechanic just across the river. Owned by, IIRC, an Australian. Asking around ought to turn them up pretty quickly, since it's a small town. Otherwise, at least one and maybe two Antigua mechanics have been posting on the Latin America forum of ADVrider.com. One posted within the last couple of days, so simple to find him. If your friend is on a long trip, I'd suggest staying away from the rebuild specialists if he's got an original shock. People are always rebuilding that "non-rebuildable" shock in Latin America, and it never lasts very long. Probably you (and he) already know that, but I thought I'd pass it along. People generally work on Saturdays, but not Sundays. Probably your friend can be on his way Monday without undue stress, but certainly Tuesday. You could do worse than hang around Antigua for a couple of days. Hope that's helpful. Mark
