Hi, The quickest and easiest is to leave the door off. You can tape some air box foam over the hole if you want, I don't. No dust problems off road yet with K& N. This will flow the same amount of air as the holes made in the top. I also took out the wire backfire screen. Brian You must be at see level or near it?? I am in about 5 to 6000 ft range as the air around is is a little thin, I am at the 3ed from the top of my clip, I tried the 4th from the top before i cut the screen out and it was a little to rich, And my gas milage droped way down, With the 3ed postion my bike runs better and gas milage is up. Just my 2 cents. Mike In a message dated 1/31/01 6:44:35 PM EST, BCSavWill@... writes: << I am running the DJ 150 main and needle in 4th groove. Regards, >>

Hi, Thanks for the info. I am in Hawaii, yep, sea level. I am getting 43 mpg. Probably a tad rich. Probably get no higher than a thousand feet on the trails. Just changed my chain to a DID  VM and got 3 mpg more. (Wonder what that equates too as bhp at the wheel??!!)  Thought I was maintaining my chain OK, it was 8,000 miles old and suffered a lot of Hawaiian Ice too. I am happy with that milage tho'. Has anyone removed the "sheild" looking thing that sort of snaps in over the intake hole on the upper, rear, left side of the air box. I'm trying to get a little more air flowing and am curious about this peice. Doesn't seem to be addressed any where. Thanks, Mark Hanke Melbourne, Fl. A16

I doubt that's the way to do it, since I don't think it's a significant restriction. Mostly it's there to keep you from dropping bolts into the airbox. Devon A15 -- "It's a troublesome world, all the people who are in it, are troubled with troubles almost every minute" Dr. Seuss

Not that it's even *there* on a lot of bikes. ISTR multiple (of the four total!) participants in Zach's recent DC Tech Session saying "oh, wow, *that's* where that part goes!" after someone removed one from his bike accidentally with the side panels *and then knew where to put it back on*... :-) On the other hand, I got home, drove out to the near 'burbs and my parents' garage to look for the funny plastic thing I knew I was missing, and then discovered that my wife had helpfully found where to snap it back into place last time she helped me work on the bike, but not told me. So it was already where it was supposed to be, and I didn't notice it. I must have been overcome by the shock of having HK actually agree to help with any kind of mechanical work... ;-) For the record, the bike runs basically the same with that widget on or off it, so far as I can tell. But then again, given the number of tiny backfires returning to idle etc. that would clearly drive Devon nuts, I may just not be all that sensitive to how the bike runs... Thor

Mornin' Gang: I just got back from pre-riding the Baja 1000 race course (a lot of fabulous new un-raced trails this year). Over on the Pacific side south of San Quitan, the course runs through a 10-mile-long silt bed where I unloaded at speed. I filled my air-box with silt, and some of it went through the (oiled and greased) filter. As a result I have to re-ring the "beast". I am convinced that the stock setup is way too small for a motor this large in (mostly) off-road conditions, and want to replace it with something that will accommodate a filter with way more filtering area. Anybody have any suggestions? Anybody made a swap? Thanks for any suggestions. Murray Dochstader B.C. Canada. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Had a sleepy-time laugh this morning. Read about Murray's Baja race course but saw it as 'Bajaj' (I also get a lot of messages from my Bajaj scooter group). Could not get my mind around riding my 10" tires through those silt beds. Was all ready to search for some knobbies, heavier shocks, and improved air filter when I realized my error. -Jim in AZ
