Since the topic of riding gear is being discussed, I have a question.
I have a Joe Rocket Mesh jacket for summer wear, and a First Gear Jacket for winter wear; both are made of cloth; both have padding in the elbows and shoulder. My question, "how much protection can a (mesh or thick cloth) jacket offer if one slides?" It seems to me that the best material would be leather? But, leather can only be worn comfortably here in the sub-tropic deep south during the dead of winter. That said, I am a student of the school that one should always wear gloves, full face helmet, and some jacket........

Well leather is great....and probably the best for protection if you follow racing....but not so great for rain or heat. I have the First Gear winter jacket and a Joe Rocket mesh also. I also have a Vance and Hines perf type paints and jacket leather. My old Hein Gerlcke leather jacket sold to me by an Auschwitz survivor I will never get rid of even though it is too small. He owned a local Yamaha shop and wrote a book about his experience in the Holocaust called "A Mengele Experiment." For general riding conditions and overall, fabric probably fits most things.

I seem to remember a test where someone dragged a couple of sandbags - one covered in leather and the other covered with Cordura - behind a vehicle for a bit then reported the observations. Does that ring a bell with anyone?

Aerostitch among others has done this. Also Motoport hired an accredited testing lab to test some of the DuPont products they use in their gear. From: PowersHouse@...

I think the late Gordon Jennings, when he was at Cycle magazine, did some abrasion testing a long, long time ago. Since it is so long ago I might be mistaken. Alan Henderson A13 Iowa single track at the moment
