Check the clutch safety switch adjustment.
Or better yet...

Subject: [DSN_KLR650] bike cuts out
My friends bike is an 05. The bike some times cuts out when he pulls in the clutch to switch gears. some times its fine other times not.
Ideas? After stalling the bike will start but then cut out again.

I've got a 2000 (A14) with 20500 miles on it. I drove it two weeks ago and all was fine. Jumped on it today and with the choke completely off, the engine would back fire on release of the throttle and eventually stall when attempting to idle. If I gave it just a little choke all was well again; it drove like normal.
Anyone else had this problem? Any ideas what is likely the problem? The carb has never been touched. Plug was changed twice and valve clearances adjusted as needed. Everything else on it is factory stock except for doo-hickey replacement many years ago.
Thanks,
Bruce

Sounds like time to clean that carburetor, and check your exhaust nuts.
