50k milestone reached
Just shy of the 50k mark the old killer cow let me know she was in need of
a full service by becoming hard to start and not wanting to idle when warm.
The right intake was right at the tight end of the spec. Re-shimmed it. The
rest were at the loose end of the spec as I had just done this job about 4k
miles ago. Need to order some more 230 and 235 shims. Gave the carb a
lick-and-a-promise cleaning, paying particular attention to the
deceleration and enrichener circuits, and replaced the fork seals, gaiters
and oil. Used 400cc per leg of 50/50 10W and ATF per Jeff Khoury's post, I
believe it was. Contemplated cutting some longer spacers but left it stock
and slapped it back together. Extended the forks to their full length this
time. Reversed direction on the TKC80 which at 3500 miles was well saw
toothed from braking. I figure the solution to this problem is to just
minimize the use of the front brake. Save it for when you really need it.
There's lots of engine braking available and more rubber in back. Lowered
the bars to the absolute lowest they would go without banging the tank.
This has transformed the feel of the front end. Stable on rain grooves at
an indicated 75mph. Able to carve canyons at a reasonably fast pace now.
The rear tire is a Shinko 705 which is a Scorpion clone but with wider
deeper grooves. This combo is a big improvement on dirt roads from anything
else I've tried. Haven't tried a knobby rear because I ride 99% street. The
Kenda, Shinko, etc. front tires are lacking in pavement performance for me.
Best street grip prior to the TKC80 was from a Pirelli Scorpion AT.
Looking forward to keeping this bike into old age and riding it as long as
I can hold it up and avoid injury.

help with military surplus top case
From all the cases I've worked with, 21 years in the military, you needed at least one latch on every side for the small cases to get them to seal watertight. The larger the case, the more latches you need.
Once you put hinges on it, you'll need to trim the aluminum flange around the top to get it to pivot, then you'll lose the rubber sealing surface. It'll eventually break.
