I'm looking at taking a ride to Intervale NH, while stopping & camping near Bar Harbor Maine, "along the way" (LOL), to look at some hiking boots.
(Intervale is on the East edge of white mountain National forest.)
Last trip I crossed at Thousand Islands, by Kingston, BUT made the MISTAKE!! of staying close to Lake Ontario. (Had to ride threw cities almost as big as Chicago, YUK)
I THINK I was told highway 7, is an ok 2 lane road, BUT looks like it does not start until 70 miles (113 Kilometers) PAST Toronto.
AND I will also, be looking for places for camping along the way.
A few EXRTA M/K's, are fine, and BETTER if it keeps me out of BIG city traffic.

Also , besides what Jeff mentioned and I built that tool a long time ago, try just jamming a broom stick handle down there to hold it in place. Have succeed with that method several times before building an all thread rod with a 15/16th head bolt of 5/8 thread size if your wondering.

The procedure I use on all forks in my shop and requires no special tools is to pull out on the upper fork leg while the lower fork leg is clamped in a vise. Zapping it once or twice with an air impact gun with pressure you put on the damper rod from pulling the forks apart will keep it from spinning and break loose this bolt. Not sure this would work if you are turning this bolt with a ratchet but it may. It ll take a few impacts to break loose the bolt.

So I'm trying to undo (or tighten) the hex nut at the bottom of the fork but the damper rod is just spinning inside the fork. I've searched around the 'net and have seen lots of talk about building your own tool to stick down the fork tube and hold the damper rod in place but can't seem to find a definitive answer on which size nut I'm going to need to weld onto the end of a piece of bar to do the job.
Also, all suggestions I've found talk about using a hex nut to fit into the top end of the damper rod but the shop manual illustration looks like the tool is a tapered square, not hex?

Yup... I just use an impact gun and hold the fork
in upside-down my hands, letting Mr. Gravity pull
down on the fork upper. I've never had one that
didn't come apart after 2 or 3 zaps..

Posted by: "Peter Dore" pmdoreklrrider I also seem to have a shock situation. This week, when just riding city streets just hitting a man hole cover (at about 35 mph, maybe a half inch down from road) felt like someone grabbed me by the spine and tried to shake the meat off me. I started realizing I could feel every bump in the road. I have 9,000 miles on my second owner 2008 KLR. Brand new Heidenau tires, and the preset on 2. I am 5'10" and weigh about 210. Do I need to set it higher? Or is something wrong. I seem to remember when I first got it, I could ride over a 4" curve straight on at 10-12 mph and barely feel it. Peter in St. Louis, still looking for someone to ride with here in the St. Louis area or down at Mark Twain national forest. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Reply to sender . Posted by: "josephgrove42" josephgrove42 To make it street legal in Washington, I had to go to DMV and get a permit to take it to the State Patrol inspection station where they inspected it, mostly for proper lighting. The inspector assigned a VIN number and put it on the trailer. I then had to return to the DMV to have it registered and licensed. Since there was no manufacturers statement of origin, I have to wait two years in order to obtain a title, but they license it immediately. Joe Grove Issaquah, WA Reply to sender . Reply to group . Or, should I go with after market on shock and or shock and springs. Would appreciate advice from persons who have had experience and can suggest what would be best to do. > >[Non-text portions of this message have been removed] > > >

canada, sarnia to bar harbor maine? (non-klr)
I'd ride through Canada's wine country and cross
into the US at the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge and
hug the south shore of Lake Ontario. I'd then
climb over the Adirondacks and enter Vermont via
the Essex-Charlotte Ferry.

canada, sarnia to bar harbor maine? (non-klr)
It looks like I took that Ferry my last/1st trip to Maine, and it was free do to construction on a bridge.
Nice area to ride.
Canada's Wine Country?????
I know, a few areas, from growing up in Flint Mi. (Murder Capital of the USA)
We went across into Sarnia a lot, even school field trips to the park, in the 3rd threw 6th grades.
