here i stand, i shall not recant.................
Friends, today I did something to my KLR that some of you will find repugnant, some of you will find it blasphemous;
"Today I Washed My KLR - Here I Stand, I Shall Not Recant................."
It been some three (3) years since I last washed my KLR (no kidding). I use 90 weight oil on the chain (to lube it) and you can imagine the amount of crud that came off the lower left rear side. My neighbor is a Chemist and he collected samples of the crud; he is sure that combination of curd is not found on the Periodic Table.
Hate me if you must for washing my KLR. Say......., did you know there is a glass circle on the right side of the engine case that shows how much you one has?
Maybe I am out of control, but tomorrow I might Armor All the tires. However, I draw the line at waxing "la Poderosa"........ a man has got to know his limitations.
I suspect that I am not the only one who sometimes washes his KLR. I suspect that there are some "closet cleaners" lurking among us?
Eddie
P.S. I used Simple Green (cleaner) and it did a decent job of removing the gunk.

Eddie,
Looks like you looked at the light a little to long; maybe not.
Actually, you done good.
Once a year washing should be on everyone's list;
call it a once a year thorough, visual inspection if you will.
Wheel cracks and loose faseners show up when you get the crud off.
Blown or leaking seals show up immediatly after a cleaning because you can now see the leak.
Those discoveries are actually, an invitation to 'fix' and should not be put off. cough.
Having someone else take a look at your bike when it is clean is also useful. They will almost always discover something that needs adjustment; don't take offense, fix the pig before it bites you and you lose a day of riding.

Mine has been washed, but you couldn't tell by looking at it.

I had to wash the back of the swingarm the other day because the buildup was preventing the axle slider plate from, well, sliding. I usually wash the bike when I'm force to work on it and usually it's a local antiseptic, not a general.

Eddie,
I know it seems imposible now but we can get you help. We are putting together an intervention team now and will confront you on your KLR washing issue as soon as we are ready.
In the mean time you should seek some mud holes right away and plan on being off work while away at treatment. The Berkshire Trail Riders have an opening in their Berkshire Big Adventure treatment center coming up in a few weeks. There are also some significant treatment options coming up in Moab as I understand it.
Just remember. The first step is admitting that you wash your KLR. You have already begun your journey to recovery.

Absolutely. Plus, dirt traps in moisture and can accelerate corrosion.
Speaking of wheel cracks, I once decided to not only wash my bike,
but also to actually clean the chain lube build-up from between the
spokes. After all was clean, I discovered that my rim had tiny cracks
around almost every spoke hole!

I was the same way, I washed my KLR only in preparation for getting inside the engine. Frankly I thought that folks who washed their bikes and strove to keep them clean were wasting time better spent riding or wrenching!
Then I was unloading my bike from a 2500 mile trip when I dropped something which rolled up against the rear rim.
As I bent down to pick up the dropped item I noticed to my horror that the rear rim was cracked such that the portion of the rim common to the spokes was perilously close to separating from the portion of the rim retaining the tire bead! The oil film from the Scottoiler combined with the dust that oil film had attracted perfectly concealed the impending catastrophic failure from all but the closest inspection.
Since that scary discovery I have made it a point to wash the bike before ALL service, no matter how minor, just to make it easier to see items needing attention.
Must admit though the the poor bike is confused. Its very used to rain but has little experience with the garden hose

I never thought much about Washing my bikes, Quick rinse if MUDDY!
Then I read an Article in "Motorcycle Consumer News" About the benefits of detailing. (WASHING)
And as Many have said, You get a close look AND FEEL, for any loose parts, cracks ETC ETC.
2. for about $6.50 I bought a small 1/2gallon hand held PUMP SPRAYER.
I fill it with a mix of Simple green & water, (PRE-rinse bike)
Give it a few pumps and Spray the whole bike a GOOD SPRAY DOWN.
(then set the sprayer on a shelf for next time. Mixed & ready.

Took the power washer to mine last fall and it paid me back by trashing the
tach. Finally found a replacement on Ebay.
