There is an aftermarket one called the "Terminator". You can score one from Fred, or from your local dealer if your parts man is on the ball. I carry one in my tankbag, waiting for the day that my EBC Dirt Racer clutch springs eat my stock cable's lunch. My stock cable has 20k plus hard miles on it, and it looks and feels like new. I know for some other applications that the factory dealer is the best place to get a clutch cable (some aftermarket ones tend to be pretty poor quality...) ...is this true for the KLR 650? Also- where's the best place to get new fork boots? Thanks! ~Eric S.

I've had a Motion Pro T2 clutch cable for about 9K miles with no problems yet. I think OEM cable is a better finished cable but the T2 seem adequate. My fork boots split at 24K miles. I got my replacement pair from Dual Star (Daystar) & I'm in the process of replacing them (fork tubes detached). These boots seem a thicker but have a universal bottom connection; the OEM boots are molded specifically to fit the groove on the fork slider. I'll report how they fit when I get them on if anyone is interested.

Someone else here has reported a bad experience with a MotionPro clutch cable, stating that it had the wrong bend out of the handlebar and did not fit properly. If that was once true, it is no longer true. My local accessories shop (Santa Clara Cycle Accessories) ordered me one as a spare. I have stood it beside the stock KLR part, and the only difference I can find is that the stock part has a little slit in the metal housing at the top while the MotionPro part does not. On the other hand, given that you can get the OEM cable from RonAyers for $15.87, I don't know if I'd bother with the non-OEM part if I ever needed another cable. (The dealership quoted me *$30* for the cable!). Only problem with ordering from RonAyers is that it may or may not be in stock, so you may get it in a few days, or it may take a couple of weeks. With the MotionPro part I walked in on Saturday and ordered it, and the part was in on Tuesday. I don't know where his distributor is, but it has to be close, because I had some defective boots and brought them to him on a Monday afternoon, the new boots were in on Wednesday. With that kind of speed (and competitive pricing) mail order suddenly seems less attractive, since it'll be the same amount of time but returning defective stuff is much harder with mail order... -E

Mike Torst had the motion-pro on his, and though he kept it well lubed, the pull on his wsa nearly twice what mine was (eom). When he tried the pull on my '95, he was dumbfounded that his should have so much more drag. He swore right there he was gonna swap it out for the oem. If you get a clutch cable anywhere than from Fred, you've cheated yourself. I forget the name of the cable he carries, but I'd call it the second best mod I've made to my KLR. Fork springs being the best, obviously. Just check the Arrowhead web site. I think there are two different cables. It's the more expensive one. I'm not kidding when I say the difference is night and day. The pull is as easy as can be and just as smooth. Mine is about two years old and with an occasional treatment with 3-in-1 oil, it's as good as new. My POS stocker frayed and broke....like so many of the stock parts that once debilitated my ride.
