Anybody ride with binoculars in tank bag ? Last Sunday I saw some interesting wildlife; it would have been nice to take a closer look. There's some affordable binoculars out there but I don't know what to get. What power is most usable ? 10 x 50 ? 15 x 70 ? Do the small, portable specimens work well ? Any advice appreciated.

I carry a small pair in my tank bag, or in the tail box when I don't have the bag.
I have used them MANY times, and looking for stronger, with out getting to big for the bag.

Bogdan,
I carry an inexpensive compact binocular in my tank bag. I don't seem to
use them a lot but when I need them they sure are handy to have along. I
find compact works well for most of my uses as I'm not scoping out an
area for hours on end. Usually it's just a quick look and then put them
away.
My advice is to buy the best you can afford. My understanding in the
optics world more expensive usually is dramatically better than less
expensive.
Having said that... the ones I carry on the bike all the time are pretty
inexpensive as they take a beating and I don't use them much. I find I
usually use them to check out trail opportunities from a distance and
also some wildlife appearances. Sometimes I use them to read signs to
try to figure out where I am or if I'm allowed on a trail or if a
property is posted.
For hiking/hunting adventures I have a very nice binocular from Leupold.
They cost me a bundle in the mid 80s but I've never regretted the
purchase price.
Best,

I've been told the quality of the lens is more importent then power.
Strong power with pour lens, Glare, Bad focusing, etc. is not good.

Bushnell used to make a pair that was instant focus. No adjustment for range needed. I never could figure out how they worked but they were good. My advice is to either go somewhere that you can try various ones, or order from Sportsman's Guide based on the price you can afford and the reviews by customers. And, if you don't like it you can send it back for al full refund. I don't work for SG, I just like doing business with them as well as other companies that offer full satisfaction money back guarantee.

Bogdan,
Although I don't take them along very often, I have a pair of Minolta 8x22 compact binoculars which I'm happy with. Minolta went out of the business in 2006, so these are no longer available.
If you've not done so already, Google how to buy binoculars to learn what to look for. One site I found is
http://www.opticsplanet.com/how-to-buy-binoculars.html. Higher power binoculars are difficult to hold steady by hand. Larger objective lenses are better for low light conditions, but make the unit larger and heavier.

I was just looking at the local Sportsmans Warehouse. Birdwatchers use 6x40, 8x40 etc. Best manageable is 10 x 40 or 50. Bigger than a ten you have to use a tripod or lean against something, or take it easy on the caffeine.
The first number is the power, second is the lens size, I think..

Pentax 8x24 is what I carry in the tank bag, & an OLD pair Sears, 7x50 at hm.
I plan on a lot better pair to carry in my backpack or Pelican tail case, for when I want better then the 8x24.
in 2011 out west (to me) I was in the mountains on a single lane dirt rd. 11,000 ft looking across the "Valley"? and seen a small white stripe, looked like a 4inch piece of white yarn.
with My 8x24's I still did not have a clue, I knew it wasn't snow on the south side in sept.
I had to use my small camcorder and regular zoom failed,
with Digital zoom I seen a TALL WATER FALL, BEUTIFULL, I also used it at the same time to see the River, that also looked like a thin white line.
I WILL have ALOT better pair by spring before heading out.

Go with a company that has the best lens! Nikon makes them and don't
know about Canon but they have some
of the best optics engineers in the business. I always check out used
stuff first and have found a couple of great
Nikon lens and have seen binoculars in pawn shops and camera
stores................
