If I'm such a smartass, at least I'm willing to do it in public. Bob has proven to be in the minority. All I've done is point out that K&N's emperor is wearing no clothes. For some reason people are afraid to think about the claims being made for products and whether or not they make sense. If you want to wear the latest clothes you see on MTV then by all means do so and use K&N air filters. The result is the same. It might make you happy. But you are not doing any good. As for the future Bob? Don't worry about me as you can no longer get thru my email filter. WOW!! David, I for one am glad that you brought this forward for discussion. Do I agree? It's hard to disregard others' experience. However, there is still research to be done. I guess I never thought about this issue too much, but I should, AND I will. Sometimes we listers need to lighten up a little bit and realize that most of these entries have a little "tongue-in-cheek" going for them, along with good information... Let's use this as an opportunity to learn, and research, and see what other people think. Don't let anyone else do our thinking,though, right David. Thanks again!! Keep it up.. MNRon

Not to restate the painfully obvious, but looking at the two filters side by side, the K&N would likely flow more and filter less. Flowing more AND filtering more, would be easily accomplished with a much larger filter, either cotton gauze or oiled foam. But the K&N is actually smaller. I don't know how this became a measure of intellect or a pissing contest. I use K&N's in my street bikes because they filter well enough for the environment. I use oiled foam in the KLR because I crash it into dirt and sand constantly. If I was using my KLR on the street only, I might try a K&N. Devon A15 mnron2002 wrote:

I decided to weigh in with some comments about the K&N filters. I also own an ST 1100 and it was time to change air filters. I had a K&N for the ST already in the garage, so I cleaned and oiled it. I too, have been concerned about the filtering ability of the K&N. I held the K&N up to the sun and looked through it. I saw many very bright pin holes where the sun would shine through the filtering material. I figured that if I could plainly see through a filter, there would also be a big path for dirt and dust to go through. After weighing the evidence, I decided not to use the K&N. I do believe that it flows considerably more air than anything else, but at the expense of filtering ability. I thing that using a K&N is better than no filter at all, but I also believe that there are many more efficient and cost effective alternatives. I bought a K&N, along with the sock they sell to put over it for dirt (I'm not in dirt as much as I'd like). The sock may improve the filtering, but I'm wondering how it affects the carburetion. Haven't tried it yet.

Ran a K&N for years. Found that it fouled quickly in the dirt to the point of having to clean it to get back home. Changed to a UNI filter at the recommendation of a local shop. Fuel mileage increase about 5mpg with longer length of time between cleanings. Won't go back. t. From: James W. ...all this 'poor-filtering' talk is making it more difficult to sell my K & N filter that has been sitting on my bench for 4.3years. shrug. Maybe I could use it as a colander? revmaaatin.
