Greetings listers; Newbie to the list here. Also newbie to the motorcycle modification world. I read through the archives a bit and have decided on the following mods to my 99 KLR650: Uni Air filter, K&N Jet kit, and Cobra Enduro Exhaust. I also read an archived post from Dave Kessler about slotting the pick up coil to get more ignition advance. Anyone else have experience doing this? It seems fairly easy by his description. I have 2 other street bikes 98 Moto Guzzi EV, 96 Triumph Speed Triple. I just bought this week a 2000 KLR 650. My first time in the dirt. I don't plan to get major down and dirty, but definitely gravel roads. Some off road stuff, but not major challenges yet. Few questions 1) What is the best on/off road magazine to subscribe to? 2) Do I need to buy a dirt bike helmut? Is the extra space in the front just so you don't fog up the windshield as much or does it serve other purposes? 3) I live in Virginia about 40 miles from the West Virginia border, actually in the Blue Ridge mountains a couple hundred feet from the Appelation (should learn how to spell it) trail. Just moved there in August. Where is the best place for me to ride? 4) Is there a local KLR club? 5) How can I find out about local events, rallies, rides, etc? Thanks, John

hi john, welcome to the group. you may find (like me) that dirt riding is really really fun, and you lust for the "major challenges" before long. anyway, here is my opinion on some of your questions: 1. all mags i've seen suck. especially dirt mags. their only concern seems to be pro motocross, and anything that's not a pro motocross tool is not worth their time. i still buy em some time tho. 2. i use an open-face helmet for dirt riding (no chinbar). seems to give me better peripheral vision. i'm starting to ride faster in the dirt, so i'm thinking about getting a real dirt one. if you ride with others, goggles are good for keeping dust out of your eyes, and dirt helmets allow goggles. i wore my full face helmet on a dualsport ride last week (since i rode the 150 hwy miles there and back). the only problem was it got really really dirty, and it's still dirty today. i wish i had taken my off-road helmet and kept my day-to-day helmet cleaner. 3, 4, 5. no clue. i live in california. if you're out here some time, i know some good places to ride a klr. -mark weaver not major challenges yet.

They all suck. They're just fat brochures for moto apparel. Dualsport news is probably the best way to go. 2) Do I need to buy a dirt bike helmut? No, but I use one on hot days or when I'm riding hard in the woods.

I think there's lots of places for you down there.

I don't know, but there are a lot of KLR listers from your area.

Your challenges may be staying away from those dirt roads after you ride them a bit.

Is there any other mag's than Dual Sport News?

My suggestion is only to use a full face helmet. A MX type will get cold and noisy on the highway, a full face road helmet will get hot and heavy in the nasty road stuff, choose by use...

Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Alaska, Montana, California... Well, all places offer their own flavor of off and on road riding. Heh, heh, heh... I suppose you meant where in Virginia?

You have found the K.O.R.G. (Klr Owners and Riders Group is one meaning), it is everywhere, but in your local area, i can't help, sorry.

The ONLY such magazine I know of is Dual Sport News...destined to be the authority on the sport. Wait a minuite, it already is. 2) Do I need to buy a dirt bike helmut? Keeps you much cooler in warm weather and when used with off-road goggles fogging usually isn't a problem. They tend to be lighter than too. 3) I live in Virginia about 40 miles from the West Virginia border, actually in the Blue Ridge mountains a couple hundred feet from the Appelation (should learn how to spell it) trail. Just moved there in August. Where is the best place for me to ride? George Washington forest has some killer mountain bike trails, and I seem to recall that motorcycles are also allowed. Dynamite country roads in that neck of the woods too. I believe a new off-road riding area in WV just opened up, thanks to some enthusiasts and some local logging concerns. Darrel A12

RE: Dirt oriented riding. There is the ever popular Dual Sport News that Kurt will be happy to sell you a subsciption to. I might also suggest that Psycho World covers the full range of motorcycling. Hello, I am looking for a KLR. I have found a couple and wondered specifically if any one knows any thing about a 1993 KLR that was for auction last week on Ebay? It is in the San Francisco area. Any one heard of it or seen it? Supposedly belongs to a lady who is selling it through a friend. Any way ,just thought I would ask. I hope to have one soon. I am new to the list. Just got an A15 today. Another fellow bought it new, didn't have enough inseam, didn't like it, went back and bought a Yamaha V Star so his feet would touch the ground. He sold it to me. 200 miles on the bike. Drove it first time today. Like it alot. Some questions. How do you remove the seat? It doesn't open like on other bikes? How much should I expect to pay for the 500 mile service? I weigh 200 pounds. Should I be doing anything to the rear preload or the forks? You have to rub all kinds of wax or whatever all over the new bike every night until you get it out of your system. I am slathering endless coats of Zymol on the tank. What do you all rub on the plastic? I applied Armorall to the seat and had to wash it off because it made the seat slippery. Jon Zink
