Andy-- 54.7mpg? That is a great number, however--You are a piker. smile. I got 58.6mpg (best ever) last week riding Black Hills canyons; never was over 55mph and most of it was closer to 35-45. That 58.6 was the best ever. That was using GPS measured miles...and big smiles even at the slower speeds. Which brings up the point: if you have to stretch the fuel, whatever 5th gear at 3.5-4,000 rpms will probably give you max range--in my experience. That gas mileage last week was an eye opener--entirely different from a previous historical data point: Three years ago when I was riding the 1998-20,000 mile new-to-me-bike home to South Dakota from Dallas, TX--often with near 50mph head winds or at least a significant side vector, I got as little as 35 mpg in Iowa while trying to hold 65-70mph. I think I hit reserve at ~155 miles; I was pretty sure I was going to play push-the-pig before reaching a gas station. With the wind beating me, and the gas consumption much higher than expected, I felt like a tattered flag limping along at 4K rpms for 25+ miles until I found a gas station. and no, I was not picky about the brand of gas at that point.... revmaaatin.> > I was simply blown away by my fuel mileage figures of late on my revamped KLR650.
