>Makes sense to me given the stock fender looks like a very effective wind catching device--they could have at least streamlined the thing a little better on a bike intended to do superslab speeds.
If you get rid of that stock sail and put on an Acerbis Baja Fender with Fender brace, you will find that you won't feel anything near the stock sail effect. If you'd like to see one on a KLR, go to the photos section, open up the album labeled "Sherlock" you will see a 97 model with one on it. jim_ama585601 [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

>>It occurred to me that the front fender could be catching quite a bit of wind. Vie never had the bike handle like this before.
Any thoughts? Do I need to think about putting a low front fender on the bike to reduce this?

This is perhaps the best advice yet seen on this list:

I tried the Aerbis front fender on my 2007 KLR. Rainwater would spray up vertically from the front of the fender and back on the rider. The 2008 or newer fender is a better choice on the older bikes. It blocks water and no issues with side winds or headwinds at hwy speeds. Mark riding in Nevada. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I've had a 2008 front fender on my '04 for a while. I love it, it's works great and there is no longer a wind problem on the freeway. In case you're curious, here's some pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/84373829@N00/2766700622/in/set-72157606753936495/ Darren Clark 2004 KLR-650
