Been reading up on the 685cc and 7065cc mods from Schnitz/Mtech. Sound interesting. Anybody done one of these? What results are you seeing? Thanks. Dave

Yes, I put a silk shirt on a pig. I did the 705, bigger valves, head porting, Power Bomb head pipe, and more. It's still a pig, just a faster pig. It will not keep up with a KTM, Honda, or a Husky. What it did do is carry my fat ass to Robbinsville NC and back at 75 mph last week from Lacombe LA. 580 miles. I left with a slightly over filled crank case, and arrived back home with a slightly over filled crank case. I put cams in it at the same time, so I can't say what they did. It's got tons of low end, Way more than stock. Excuse my rambling, I did not think this one out. BTW, it's an 07. 43'000 miles. Hard miles. Got it new, These are all my miles, or smiles.Been layed down many times. Last time in the Smokies' ah last week I think,Last week. Don't be fooled, A Mich T63 or a Dunlap 606 will hold up to a sport bike.I found this out the hard way Call me a bad motorcycle driver, whatever these guy's fly. Thanks, John, glad to hear it went well. Power? Vibration? Noise? Total cost? PITA factor for the install? Appreciate your input. Dave We did a 685 on my A17 couple months ago. It s great runs great, uses no oil, etc. Very Respectfully, John Cox From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com [mailto:DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of fw189uhu Sent: Saturday, June 18, 2011 11:46 AM To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Anybody Done The 685cc or 705cc Mod? <><><><><><> <><><><><><> Dave, I did the 685 last year. Not hard at all if you follow the directions from Schnitz and in a Clymers manual. For me the big difference is less vibration. I'm talking the difference between lawnmower smooth and sewing machine smooth. Also just a bit more grunt and performance than a stock 650. Fuel economy is the same for me at 50mpg with 14/46 sprockets and no oil use. Speaking of the Schnitz 685 kit, will the 95 head take a cylinder from a 96 up bike? Mine was the very first 685 on the road, even before Cary got his bike done. It has been trouble free for more than 25K miles now.. Here are the dyno results: http://johnbiccum.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/KLR685-dyno/1198525_UFLYW#87767369 _AGnfu Note that there is no "stock" dyno run. The first run is with the 685 piston and stock valves the second run is with the 685 and the oversize valves. I'd do the valves when you are inside the engine, my stock valves failed (tuliped) just 5K miles after fitting the 685 piston. Hi John Holy smoke. I've been reading all I can find on the web about the 685 and 705 and while many people recommend getting the head done, I haven't found anybody who's mentioned the valve failure after upgrade. How many miles did your original valves have on them? It seems to me that if I'm going to the trouble and expense of doing this upgrade (including the head upgrade), it makes more sense to go with the 705 for just a few hundred more. Everybody I've heard from or read about who's actually done the conversion seems to really love it (685 and 705). Thanks for the heads up. People have told me the best way to improve (and easiest) the KLR's performance is with a pumper carberator instead of the constant velocity one that comes with stock. I think the CVC carb is good for changing altitude but falls short on throttle response. I don't think I want to mess with all the trouble and expense of a 685. A friend did that and has had to tear it apart again for various things a few times but don't know if it had something to do with the conversion. Why not get a 800 GS Beemer to start with instead of going through all that. A KLR is what it is and I accept mine kinda like it is. Staying alive at 55 mph Criswell Criswell

The traffic light sensors are induction change sensors, like a metal detector. A magnet will not work. you need more mass of a magnetic material like iron. which the KLR just ain't got. Even the specially marked "bicycle" sensors around here only detect the KLR 50-50. -- charlie
