clutch cable, release lever

How in the world do you get the end of the clutch cable out of that release lever assy?? I'm wanting to take off the rt.side case to get in to check/clean the internal oil strainer. Have drained the oil & coolant, all ready to go. Several descriptions I've read say, just undo the cable clamp on top of the clutch cover then slip the cable out of that actuator / release lever. No sirree. Yes, there is a notch on the back side of that actuator but the "barrel" on the cable end won't go thru the notch. It would appear that u need to get the (thinner) cable itself thru the notch. But you can't run the barrel back any further because it butts right up against that pivoting lever. I must be overlooking something ridiculously simple, but it's driving me nuts. I've belonged to this forum for about 4 yrs now, & looks like now it's my turn to ask for HELP!! Oh, we're talking an '07 (the last of the "legacy" series). Thanks & Best Regards to all, Mike Holl Bellingham WA

Take your clutch cable loose at the handlebar lever first to give you extra slack at the bottom. Then loosen the adjuster and lock nut on the lower end of the cable. Push back the rubber boot and pull the outer cable out to expose the inner cable. You can then slide the inner cable through the slot in the mounting bracket. Hope this helps.
