clutch

when i go from neutral down to first at a stop light my gears engage wtih a noticable thummp or gear grind.. my 2000 KLR has 1700 miles. I have lubed the cable and made adjustments at the lever and down below at the main clutch adjustment. Going up through the gears seems smooth. Is this normal? Any suggestions? thanks. Pat

The other night, about 30 mostly freeway miles from home, my shift lever
snapped. (Strange as I've not dropped the thing for a few months.) Using
poor judgement, I shifted into fourth with some pliers, and slipped my way
home. I suppose there were a few more stop & gos than I estimated, as now
my clutch slips under heavy acceleration in the higher gears. The problem
doesn't seem to be getting worse though. It may be my imagination, but it
seems like it's gotten better over the past few rides. What have I done?
Do I need to replace the clutch?

Hi,
You should at least check the plates for wear, over heating, warping. I think
you would be wise to replace all the plates.

What could be causing my clutch to be really stiff??? I mean getting
hard to pull in clutch lever. but still ridable. Left hand is
getting stronger then right.
It's not the cable I already changed it. It sounds like it's in the
clutch housing. The sprigs are making an awful squeaking noise. And
yes the oil is fresh and full.
Anyone else have this problem? The Fix??

Did you lube the new clutch cable? My bike came right off the
showroom floor with a very dry and catchy clutch cable.

I am pretty sure I need a new clutch. Here are the symptoms. When I
gas it hard the engine whines and the wheels eventually "Catch up" I
have adjusted the clutch cable and it's not that. I thought maybe it
was the oil I was using so I changed oils and it was still doing it.
Then I thought it just went away cause it stopped doing it but when I
checked my oil i was a 1/2 qt low. When I put the oil in the MIDDLE
of the sight glass, it was slipping again. SOOO what do you think?
New clutch? If so, how hard is it to change a clutch? Do I need any
special tools? How much does a new one cost?
