nklr: m7 metric bolts: mythical?

Post by JWF » Fri Mar 25, 2011 12:12 am

You engineer types will know why I can't find any bolts in size M7. There are four bolts on my bicycle, M7x1.0 (I checked with the thread gauge at the store). I want to switch them out for stainless steel ones, so they won't interfere with this built-in compass I got. (I never knew SS was non-magnetic either; jeez, where've I been? And how can that be?) At the local stores and at the six online outfits I tried, the sizes for metric bolts skip from M6 to M8. I can't change sizes because the bolts thread into lugs built into the frame. I'm mystified.

Nuts but no bolts. Odd. http://www.fastenal.com/web/search/products/_/N-0&Ntk=Search+All&Ntt=m7+stainless It can't be an engineering problem, there are nuts. I couldn't find titanium or brass either. I assume aluminum won't handle the load. I also assume that you don't want to drill and tap it for a larger size. Can you drill them out and put a nut behind it? You could make your own, I guess. http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?item_ID=92131&group_ID=24886 Robert P. SS is not completely non-magnetic. It still contains iron and will attract a magnet, and will hold residual magnetism... just not as much as "regular" mild steel. If you want bolts that will not interfere with your compass, use titanium, brass, aluminum or Delrin (depending on your load requirements). -Jeff Khoury From: "JWF" To: "DSN KLR650" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Thursday, March 24, 2011 10:12:04 PM Subject: [DSN_KLR650] NKLR: M7 metric bolts: mythical? Robert- Yeah, odd. And no, I wouldn't use anything but steel. Thanks for the link to the die, I'll think about it.

Jeff- Titanium would be the only material strong enough. Jeez, titanium? Really?

Mark- Thanks, I'll try them.
