chain oiling?

I have an 09 with 1,000 miles on the odometer. At 500 miles sprayed PJ1 blue lable chain lube, kind of sticky and messy!!!!
One KLR fan I met recommended cleaning the chain with WD-40, then using 30 wt motor oil on the chain. Said the O rings are a sealed system and all you need to do is make sure the chain/sprokets are oiled every 300-500 miles. Looking for input from this experiened group.
Thanks,

Nothing has been shown to give longer chain life than regular cleanings with WD40. 30 wt every 30 seconds might help the chain life, but every 300 miles is indistinguishable from doing nothing, unless the 30wt catches some grit. Then your chain could be gone in 5000 miles.

I spend too much time in dusty muddy places to brag about chain life, but.. I do like the WD-40 douche to the chain for cleaning, prop rear wheel up, spin wheel and spray (and spray) chain and let it drip off...
Now with that noted if I do plan on commuting (no dirt) I will take a oil can pumper with Chain saw bar oil (really sticky) and hit the o-rings and chain to basically keep the rust away.
Right now my chain is shiney and dusty at the same time, if it had been oiled from last rides (offroad) is would be really messy if the dust/mud sticking to the oil.
WD-40 bath and it ready to ride... Tada.. The O-rings "retain" the chains lube the links just need to be clean of abrasives (dust/mud)

This chain was just some bulk chain we had at the shop I worked at few years back, seems to be holding up well. Crap we had on a spool for Polaris 4 wheelers

I dont oil my chain. I lube my sprockets by dripping oil on the chain. As a result... My stock chain went 38,00 miles. Thats with the hand oil it 1-2 times a week. Now I use a Scot-oiler with 90w. I expect to improve that number by many thousand. I'm about 29K into the second chain. I do clean my chain every 10 or 12 thousand miles with WD 40. 90% paved/10% gravel. Mud only when I make a mistake on the 90/10.

I would have a scott oiler also if I road pavement everywhere I went, but then again I would have a shaft driven bike if I road the pavement everywhere..
I got to get "one" bike, wife told me to pick any bike I wanted when I retired form the Navy, being a Yooper (Upper Michigan) the KLR650 was my pick, Honda 650 I liked, but wanted a little more road friendly for 2-up riding.
Now looking at other options, the DR-(?)400 would have might been a better choice for me, work is about 20 miles highway (posted 55 Mph) and when at work am about 7.3 miles from camp in which 5.9 miles is an old gravel road.. ( A BLAST !! on a aired down KLR650 ) Have had this bike looking like a flattrack bike around corners, have slid from inside of corner all the way across the road to where the road grater makes the edges.. But after a scare on aired up tires retain the heavy wrist for straightaways now...

#ygrps-yiv-583901534 p {margin:0;}Sticky chain lube is a killer on dual-sport bike chains. It attracts dust and grit, only to become a grinding rouge that eats away the o-rings.
Your friend is correct. Nearly any oil will suffice to keep the o-rings moist and the grease contained within the links. I use plain 'ol gear oil (recommended by the manual, btw) every now and then, and hose it down with WD to remove build up and dirt every other oiling or so.

Thanks for the links, Fred! Honda: Concept bike? Looks awfully finished to me. What a massive beast with tons of fun potential! Triumph: Comparable to a DL1000, power and weight-wise. Looks about as fragile as a DL,too with the engine sticking out in the wind. I also noted it had street tires in the photos. It'd make a neat back road bomber, though. For the right price. A new 'Strom is running nearly $10k now. =( Guzzi? Funky fun. Gotta love a shaft drive V-twin! ...................... Just don't take 'em too far off road.
