I haven't used a magnetic drain plug. I always wanted to get one except Fred was perpetually sold out. Then my need for one went away as I realized you have a very large magnet that should eventually pick up most debris. It's called the flywheel/magneto. Try fishing out one of those pesky bolts when doing a valve adjustment after you forgot to stuff some rags around the openings. They will stick to that big magnet down in the hole and become nearly impossible to retrieve. -svt-

Jim, Thanks for sharing the interesting comments about your doohickey replacement. I was looking at a few sites last night to get an idea of what some upgrades are going to cost me. A magnetic drain plug is available from Dual Star. It's also low profile which is suppose to save a few ripped out threads or busted cases from sliding over rough stuff with a stock drain plug. Cost is $14.95 and p/n is 32-00010-002. If you don't have a metal bash plate, nothing will save you. Since we have some new people on the list, let me again offer my opinion that you shouldn't take a KLR off of paved roads without upgrading the bash plate. -- Devon Brooklyn, NY A15-Z '01 KLR650 '81 SR500 cafe racer "The truth's not too popular these days....." I took the size (According to the FAQs) to the local NAPA store and they had one like it but shorter. Instead of 1.5 inches long it is 1.25+ inches long. Will this work okay? Or does it have to be 1.5 long?
1.5 is the thread pitch, rather than length... As long as the replacement isn't longer than the original, you'll be fine. Might be fine even if it's longer. Krokko -- Dr. J. Christopher Krok John Lucas Adaptive Wind Tunnel Caltech MS 205-45, Pasadena, CA 91125

Sounds good. I was thinking of doing the exact thing for my KLR250. I have a magnetic plug but haven't installed it yet, and I'd like to see if there's any steel in the present sump of oil (did a couple of rough dirt rides on it). I have a bunch of those magnets too. Should work fine. I read an article a while back in DIrt Rider (or similar) where they bolted two huge rare-earth magnets (like hard drive magnets) inside the crankcase as an auxiliary "oil filter", in an apparently successful effort to make a WR400 last for the entire Glen Helen 24hr race. BTW the rotor in the KLR will do the same thing, wipe off the rotor with a clean white rag when you do a doohickey install, you may see a bit of metallic powder stuck on it. Devon

I like the idea of the magnetic drain plug, but is there any concern this will make the rest of the case magnetic? I know if I rub a magnet on my screwdriver, the screwdriver becomes magnetic.

But the screwdriver is steel, the case is not. Dooden A15 Green Ape

Hi Smiley, Magnetize a KLR case? If that happens, we will send it to Rome (with two witnesses) to be verified as a miracle. It would be the worlds first aluminum magnet. !0) revmaaatin.

The rest of the case I believe is aluminum.
