Should have mentioned I've got two KLR's now and I'm setting up one for strickly road, back and forth, here and there. I'm wanting the 10 inch overstock version that is way too tall for off roading. By chance do you have one in the corner or on a shelf? Thanks Marshall E

Luc, Stock is 15/43 so you take 43 divide by 15 and get a ratio of 2.86. The ratio of the new gearing of 16/45 is 45 divided by 16 which is 2.81. The percent different is -1.92% meaning the engine will be turning that much slower than with the stock gearing. At 5,000 rpm you could multiple 5,000 by 0.9808 (100 minus 1.92) to get 4904 rpm and the difference from the stock gearing would be 96 engine rpm slower. Now if you are going to do some trail riding and changed the 16 tooth front for a 14 tooth front. Well, just substitute the numbers above and do the calculations to see a very nice difference. Start from what we know: (divide the big number by the small) 15/43 = 2.866 14/43 increases the RPM ~400 for the same speed 43/14 = 3.07 ratio a .203 movement in ratio = ~ 400 rpm movement. (NOTE: the rpm gauge is limited in its absolute accuracy, but this puts you in the ball park. It might actually be 327 or 415rpms. ) Some other useful numbers: 16/46 (2.875)is roughly equivalent to 15/43 (2.86) 45/16 = 2.812 Luc, the answer to your question: you will see more speed for the same rpm you had at OEM gearing. You will see a change in your RPM's. smile. but what you really want to know and what you gain by having the 45T is this 45/14 = 3.21 45/13 = 3.46 43/14 = 3.07 43/13 = 3.30 Having the 45T rear (mine is a JT 46T--not available in the US)is that it gives the KLR a whole new life at the low-speed end of our riding spectrum. The down side is that if/when you select the low end gearing, you will or you might want to be limited on how fast you want to ride. = 65mph @ 6500rpms; otherwise, the 'prize' you will win is an attendant increase of oil consumption if you persist at high rpm's for any length of time. Why should you think about a sprocket change? For 20 minutes of time, changing the $20 front sprocket you get a whole new bike. Especially, when coupled with the 45T (or 46T) sprocket, it is one of the best REAL farkles you can buy. NOTE: The 16/46T rear requires a 108 link chain. I have no knowledge if a 16/45 combination will work with a OEM 106 length chain. Even if you just change the 15/43 to a 14/43, you will have a much better mannered bike at the stop light or on the gravel roads and jeep trails. Three of us changed to a 13/43 for the GDR beginning and what a great combination that was. We were still logging 50+mpg averages because we were mostly riding a
